Cutlass bearing - old school brass or non metalic?

I have only seen non-metallic cutlass bearings used on rudder posts. Fast spinning prop shafts are better protected with a bronze sleeved bearing as they shed heat to the struts more efficiently.

I've use the non-metallic ones in prop struts in everything from trawlers to faster large boats and never seen a heat issue.
Plus they seem to make them in all the same shaft sizes as the metal ones. And I don't recall seeing any "for rudder shaft use only" label on them.
But as they say, YMMV.

Bronze cased bearings cause aluminum struts to erode away. Non metallic cased bearings make this problem go away. Cooling is not an issue as the water flow thru the slots carries away any heat produced. KingsCraft had a big problem with struts due to using bronze cased cutlass bearings.

Know what you mean. Last one I did I had to pull shaft and hack saw it. Puller wouldn't move it.
I want to change them out on my Trawler, yes I can say that now it's officially mine as of noon today.
What would you suggest Capt Bill, OHB and others?
How much do they cost? It's on the surveyors list to do by next year. I think I'll have them done this year, no this month.

I have done a great many over the years with various methods. With your engines the shafts might be 1-1/4" and whatever size is along with the length of the cutlass and outer diameter determines the price. Pricing for more common cutlass bearings was about $80 each a couple of years ago when I did my 2" shaft cutlass bearings so your might be a bit less.
The smaller sizes often allow you to change them with and tools and press plates but over the past 6 years or so I have been spoiled by renting/borrowing a hydraulic bearing press which makes it very easy and does not require that the shafts come out. This job requires the removal of the props and a lot of time spent under the boat removing & replacing the bearings so many do not try it themselves. Because of these reasons a large bulk of the cost is taken up by labor and not the parts themselves.
Other items which you may wish to inspect and or renew if you are down there doing cutlass bearings include: shaft inspection, coupling condition, trans output seals , prop checks/tunes/adjust,strut fattener inspection, strut inspection, shaft alignment. They may need nothing but if they do need anything you are already in the area and partially on your way to addressing them when you are at the cutlass's.

Thanks Smitty, the survey says I have 1 and 3/8ths shafts. I guess the best way to determine the shaft size with calipers?
I know on Wireless One I had the replacement 4 years ago but I was installing the dripless PSS system.
I had a large bill but I also bent a shaft installed new Aquamet 22 shafts and had an alignment because of a hard grounding.
The (on the Trawler) output seals on the Borg 71C's show no signs of leaking.

West marine shows two common sizes for a 1-3/8 shaft diameter - same length - but with a different OD - that would be the struts ID. please note they identify the bearings by the codenames "Devilfish" and "Dogfish".
I have always used Morse bearing but these prices can likely be beat easily.
