Dave, I just saw seatows post on facebook. They are pulling a few boats with pods off sandbars.

Btw, i have Ben here now painting. Thank you!

Just looked at the Sea Tow post, we saw them towing that boat in when I was by Dave and Walter's boats. We were wondering what happened.

Not sure the pods had much to do with it. Can happen to anyone.

Btw those pods are Zeus. Not ips. Based on depth of pod I am gonna say he was not in channel.

Also I think they are saying over time they have ungrounded pod boats and none ripped off and these did. Don't think it's recent that they ungrounded many pods. Also this guy clearly was not in channel.

More info from Sea tow. Also I confirmed that they said this is the first time they ever saw a pod get ripped off. I am guessing because he ran hard into the mud. Shafts potentially would of ripped off and sunk the boat, boat stayed afloat!

The boat was heading south in the Lindenhurst Cut. He made the turn to head west in the State Channel too tight and hit the SW corner of the cut. He was not in the channel when he hit bottom. I am not sure if they were Merc or Volvo Pods, but they sure came off easily. They did however work as advertised and not allow the boat to take on any water. We offered to retrieve the pods using airbags but Surfside 3 told us that they would somehow get them for the owner.
Hi Dave, I am not sure if it was his first trip on the boat, but it was new. He was taking the boat from SS3 to Montauk (where the homeport is). He had heard that FI Inlet was not passable (which is not true), so he was going to head out of Jones. And yes, I meant over time we have ungrounded many pod boats, but have never seen any break off. This was our first pod boat ungrounding this year.

I came through FI inlet yesterday from riverhead, via Shinnecock inlet. Fire island inlet was fine. The hand drawn diagram from sea tow was very helpful, as there are some areas of skinny water on the inside (southeast side) of the area between buoys 4 and 6 but other than that it was fine. As was the trip around by kismet, west channel, and over to lindenhurst.

Congrats

Congrats!
Best of luck!
I may know that boat as I met a guy at Watch Hill last year with that boat from Aquebogue.

The first ones weren't built to break off. It wasn't pretty when one grounded in NC near Beaufort. Numerous injuries to the test drivers.

Hi Ed, I'm coming through F.I. Inlet on Saturday did you take a wide enough turn as you came around the point or is it shoaling up. It looks from Sea Tow chalk board chart that you need to be over on the Sore Thumb side.

Thanks for the update.

Billy, yes, take that turn nice and wide. Depending on the tide you can see the breakers, if not a polarized sunglasses and you can easily see the color difference. Buoy 4a helps you go wide, but there is plenty of water to the northwest of the channel at that point, and it was really easy. My depth gauge was working intermittently at that point. But I saw no less than 6-8 feet beneath the keel, which was 3 feet down.. After the inlet the channel is clearly marked, all the way to west channel. Don't break a sweat, it was a beautiful ride..

Thanks Ed, new boat (to me) draws four feet. Obviously on a maiden voyage I don't want any problems.
