Hey everyone, Would love to hear some ideas for our first day trip with the wife and 2 little ones on a 30' maxum out of piermont NY. I'm looking to start the season off right and hope my wife catches the "fever" we all have. Very excited to find this forum, and can't wait to participate.

Rondout Yacht Basin, Kingston, NY for an overnight.

For a lunch, Newburgh

Just take her on a cruise up-river. Show her West Point (you can call and the harbormaster will allow you to dock, apparently), go see the castle in the middle of the Hudson across from Cornwall, etc. It's just a great view! Stop at Newburgh for lunch (tie up, etc.), then come back south...

Sounds great. Any specific restaurant or marina in Newburgh?

Torches in Newburgh, just remember that the water can get pretty choppy depending on wind and boat traffic. Take her during the week when it is calm.

Just pay attention to your charts and don't get too close to Bannerman's Island (the castle). IIRC, you want to stay to the west of the island.

How about a simple trip up to Croton, anchor and have lunch, lounge a little and enjoy the peacefulness. I would wait another couple of weeks before venturing too far due to the debris still afloat. We had a nice ride Sunday up to Kingston but I wasn't relaxing at the wheel, saw more than a few scary pieces of driftwood.

If you do go to Newburgh you actually have a choice of 7 different restaurants, and you can dock at Front Street Marina or Torches - if you eat at Torches!

Have you even been told about going in and out of Piermont, paralleling the jetty as you go out because of shallow water? Good luck working on your admiral, do everything you can to make the first couple of outings pleasant and trouble free.

Up here in Kgn. you have Ship to Shore, which is the best there is here. I have heard that Rosita's and the Steele house have recently changed their menus I don't know if it was for the better or not. Ship To Shore used to drive over to the Rondout Yacht Basin (best in kgn) and pick folks up for dinner, I'll bet they still do.

If you want to start real close by you have the Striped Bass restaurant just north of the Tappen Zee Bridge across the river.

Piermont is great being close to home, but you are right there is no water. Even staying parallel to the jetty is an uneasy route. I'll be prepared to go up to Newburgh, but willing to sit on the hook in croton depending on conditions. these are all great ideas, thanks for all advice.

Croton can get very nasty if there is a north wind.

Trip to newburgh was great. We weren't sure if the weather was going to hold up on sunday, so we thought we might only get as far as croton, but we got lucky. Cruising at about 22-23 knots we made it from the tappan zee to newburgh in 1hr 30 min. Beautiful trip going north. We left later to get a better handle on the weather, so we had a great early dinner at torches on the patio with a band. Heading home we came up on some huge clusters of debris around west point(wasn't there going north?). The park police gave us the heads up, and led the way so we didn't even skip a beat. I guess it pays to monitor 9/16. hats off to those guys! The north westerly wind picked up pretty good around haverstraw bay which bumped us around a bit, but was smooth into shallow piermont after that. Thanks for the advice/suggestions.

Tony I think that the CG rules require us to keep the radio on, and by the way I normally add channel 13 to the list. That way I hear the commercial traffic coming as well. I've come around World's End at about 30 knots and had a tug with a 4 barges wide push coming right at us. Suprise!
Debris on the river changes and morphs into all sorts of strange appearances. It can be completely clear but a wind shift and tide change can bring all of it off the shorelines etc..
It always pays to keep a look out.

Hogan, Offshore Magazine did a piece on Kingston waterfront back in February. Would it be OK to post a link to the article?

thanks Dan, 13 is added to the monitor list. That is a sweet article. A few boats in cornetta's asked me to be a part of a kingston run later in the season, i can't wait.

If you need to communicate with any commercial vessels, use channel 13. I always monitor 9, 13, 16 & 69.

Channel 13 is also use to communicate with bridges when you are requesting an opening.

Why 69? Isn't that the channel you switch to after contacting someone on 9/16?

I monitor 69 because most of the people I boat with communicate on that channel - we call each other directly on 69 rather than using the already overcrowded 16 to hail then switch.
