Delta education for the kids

I had the opportunity and the pleasure last weekend of boarding the research vessel Robert G Brownlee currently docked at Antioch in front of Humphrey's restaurant, next to the Antioch marina. All month and February they're taking kids from many of the local schools on field trips around the delta and teaching them things about underwater ecosystems and the health of the delta and the role it plays in the drinking water for much of the state. It was really a lot of fun watching them catch fish in a net for the kids to see (and then release them) and take samples of mud and plankton. Our fearless captain even crossed Sherman Lake and then braved Mayberry Slough in this 90' vessel! I was a little white-knuckled for that! Yeow!

Thanks for sharing that info west! This kind of info doesn't get disseminated around enough. I hope lots of kids will get a good understanding of the delta, without any political agenda!
 
That boat is based out of Redwood City. It is used to shallow water. The thing is powered by two B series Cummins. The same motors I have in two of my 25'-27' towboats. Seems a bit underpowered to me, but I'm sure is very economical for its size.
They have a nice program!
 
When my son was in elementary school I also had the pleasure of chaperoning on the Marine Science field trip, based out of Redwood City.

I was a pretty active parent, and chaperoned a number of field trips to the library, zoo, etc. This one was different. I *really* enjoyed that trip!

If you ever have the chance to send your kids do it! If you can go too, then go!

Yeah, the captain said its draft is about 5 1/2'. I kept my eye on the depth sounder, and he was able to keep, well, an arm's length of water under the boat!
