depth gauge

Hi everyone i am new to this site! I was thinking about getting a depth gauge for my 1995 maxum but i didn't exactly know if it was worth it? I don't want to pay anybody around the Tampa area which is where i live because over here they charge like $79 an hour just for labor! I wanted to do it myself but i was wondering if it was worth it for me to install it? I really don't want to start drilling holes on my boat because i am not too familiar with that! I figured i can pretty much know when shallow water is coming up but i wanted to know what you guys thought about a depth gague? Please let me know all the help would be appreciated it thanks!
