Hi,

What are you guys paying for a detail? I just got a price for 24 per foot, it s a 34ft express boat. So, 816, seems a little high. The price included "buff, polish and application of premium polymer sealant to both hull and topside. Clean inside all hatches and compartments, clean and treat all vinyl with a UV protectant, clean polish and seal all metal, clean and treat all isinglass with a UV protectant. "

I think I recall paying more like 18 a foot last year 2 years ago on a different boat.

Thansk,

G

Sounds like a good deal. I paid $3200 for my 46 foot motoryacht last spring.

I think it runs me about $25 a foot and that is a flybridge boat
That is a good price especially with glass getting done.
It's alot of work, yeah its pricey but just looking at it or thinking about it hurts my back!

Hi,

Thanks for the feedback. With the a bigger boat this spring, doing riser and manifolds on twins and some upgrades planned, I may have been a little price sensitive. I do love having a well detailed boat to start the season.

4 weeks to launch if all goes as planned!

Sounds like a good price for a 3 step (compound, polish and last step product) process on the exterior and clean and detail of cockpit and cabin.

I paid $900 last season to do the outside hull and topside on our 33' Cruisers. Your price for all that sounds great. I know what its like to try to cut back on the overhead. Admiral complains 'softly' each season. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet. Hy

Luckily, I pay all the family bills and take care of our finances so she has no idea what it really costs to own the boat..........hmmm or anything else for that matter......

Hi Gary did you end up using the detailer who quoted you $24 per foot? Do you highly recommend them? If yes, can I get their contact info. Thank you!

Hi,

I did get it done and I do NOT recommend them. I used L & I Detailing (L & I Marine). They did a bad job. Didn't do what they said a missed a lot. They didn't remove the canvas, so, didn't clean the inside or top of the arch. Did't open or claim any compartments, didn't even clean the fold out seats. Inside of windshield frame had mold, was not touched.

I'll try someone else next year.

Thanks,

g

Did you let the owner know they had more work to do? In a perfect world, the owner should look over the job to make sure everyone did what they were supposed to do, before asking for payment. Unfortunately we don’t live in a perfect world and sometimes an owner entrusts the wrong people to do the right thing. Assuming the owner is a good businessman, he will make it right for you. If he does not make it right, sorry for your misfortune, but at least you will be his last victim for anyone on boatered and our many boating friends.

Hi Dani-Lu,

In this case the owner did the work himself, by himself. I did call him and left a calm message indicating my disappointment and telling the items he missed. He never returned my call. I expect to at least hear back he was sorry i wasn't happy or better yet offer to make it right.

In the other detailing thread CurrentSea has recommended the same detail company, saying they are great. He obviously has had a different experience then me. I had used them, maybe 5 years ago and was happy, thats why I used them this year, but, didn't get the same result.

It’s a shame when someone doesn’t do the job they’re supposed to do. I’d be fit to be tied. Did you notice this stuff before you paid him?
I rarely pay anyone for stuff like that until I inspect the work they did.
I’ve never paid anyone to detail a boat or car because it’s always been kind of a hobby for me. But after getting this boat ready to launch this year, then doing my kids boat and my Uncle’s boat, and my now 64 year old back complaining, I’ve been giving some serious thought to paying someone to do the 410 next Spring. The up and down on the ladder and running the machine for all those hours over several days didn’t agree with my sciatica.
Honestly though, after hearing complaints like this and seeing some of the work these guys do, I think I’m going to figure out a way to spread out the work to lessen the burden and keep doing it myself.

ChezBippy,

Bad job and no call back. Well, I have heard enough.

L & I Detailing (L & I Marine) is on my never use or recommend list.

Unfortunately this seems to happen too often in the marine business in our area. Maybe weeding some of these bad business people out will send a wakeup call to this small industry on LI. Too many of these businesses get away with this behavior over and over without penalty.

For the record, if anyone needs their cockpit seats redone, never, ever, ever use Captain Nunzio. I wasted $4,000 having him redo my seats. The stitching started opening the first season I got the seats back from him, after 2 months of missed completion promises. He did nothing to make things right, and tried to say I caused the seams to open in all the seats by standing on them when I install and remove the canvas. For the record I don’t stand on my seats and even if I did, the seams should not rip through the vinyl. The anger and frustration I felt was almost uncontrollable, but what can I do? The inside of a prison is not anything I ever want to see. I had to hire another upholsterer to redo all his work - Talk about an expensive education!

How do we create a stickie of marine vendors to avoid like L & I Detailing (L & I Marine), Captain Nunzio, Upholstery? And we can share this list with these vendors, giving them a chance to respond.

And good ones to recommend like Tony at AMC Canvas, and Rob’s favorite, Waves and Wheels, who not only do excellent work, but also stand behind their workmanship. Maybe no vendor goes on the good list unless 2 or more boaters agree.

Just a thought.....

I would continue to disagree with that.
Austin from L&I did an amazing job on my boat.
I think all vendors have a bad day, just like you and I and one bad review does not shape a vendor.

I used to use Jose of Crystal Shine, then Victor of Precise Touch, both were good but eventually got sub-par.

I think vendors get fat and happy and therefore you need to switch now and then to keep them on their toes and want your business!

Dave when did you last use Austin? Dani-lu can you please post wave & wheels contact info. Thanks guys!

Austin cleans my boat every other week.
He detailed at the beginning of the year and did an amazing job.
Come see my shine! I did ceramic coating.

Waves and Wheels won't come into AYC.
You have 3 vendors in AYC - Jose, Victor, Austin.
Austin clearly is the best of the 3 right now.

Strongly agree about AMC. They are great.

Dave, I have no horse in this race, and I agree all vendors are not perfect. But, how they handle their mistakes or perceived mistakes, is more important than anything else they do. Most customers are very forgiving when their chosen vendor makes things right. But I disagree that we should have to switch a vendor to keep them on their toes. For example, had Capt. Nunzio, the boat seat upholsterer offered to make things right, I would have offered to keep him whole (i.e. another $1,000 for additional vinyl) understanding how difficult it is to keep a small company afloat. Losing the profit on my job should have been his penalty, not mine. Instead he made a fool of himself, lost any future business from me and everyone that asks me for an upholsterer, will know to avoid Captain Nunzio.

I know there are always 2 sides to a story. But not returning your customers call is unacceptable. Unless he had something unfortunate occur in his personal life.
