The House of Representatives has approved more than $8.7 million in spending for an Army Corps of Engineers project to dredge Fire Island Inlet and stabilize public beaches on Jones Island, Representative Steve Israel announced last week.
But a Senate spending proposal for the project yet to be voted on is for $4.7 million, and the final amount would be a compromise between the two figures, said Mr. Israel, a Democrat from Dix Hills.
The project would involve dredging of at least a million cubic yards of sand from the inlet, where shoaling impedes navigation from Great South Bay to the Atlantic Ocean.
Under the project plan announced by Mr. Israel, the dredged material would be deposited on Gilgo Beach, a Town of Babylon beach on Jones Island, and west of the inlet. With Senate approval, work could begin late next year.
Mr. Israel said the beach replenishment would protect the barrier island from ''the ravages of hurricanes and winter storms.'' It would also safeguard a section of Ocean Parkway that came within 15 feet of being washed away in winter storms in 1991 and 1992, his office said.
The proposed project is separate from another proposal to replenish beaches on Fire Island. The Army corps shelved that project, referred to as the Fire Island interim project, after New York State declined to support it. The current state and federal plan is to proceed with a study for an omnibus South Shore project extending from Fire Island Inlet east to Montauk Point. John Rather

Does anyone remember that little (shallow) cove/basin that use to exsist.....on the south side of the F/I inlet....east of Democratic Point ??
It was a GREAT spot to hang out. Last time I was there...they had filled in the entrance.

Don, I am not sure if it was filled by anyone but nature… Back in 2002, I had just got my 280 and I went in a few times at high tide, but near fall that year I almost became locked in. I thought it was high tide, at least pretty sure. I think the tell tale sign was no one else was in there. I was able put the drives all the way up and get out. In 2003, I got my 320 with inboards, I was glad there was no entrance at all or I may have attempted go in. No lifting drives with I/B’s!!
Now I enjoy Sore Thumb just across the inlet, the water is much cleaner. I prefer going in more north to avoid any currents while swimming.

Yup........I use to go in with my 280DA with I/O's.....on high tide also. But it looked like it was deliberately filled in last time I was there..... I thought maybe they didn't want anyone in there anymore. It was a nice quiet protected spot.

Maybe someone else would have the details. Possibly because it was dieing a slow death, slowly filling in with the movement of the tides, it was filled in totally. This could be why in 2003 there was absolutely no entrance.
In the mean time... Did see what happend to "Bob" on NBR. Not sure how to react.... Rob is overthere now... being Rob

I do think he has a point.I'm pretty sure that cove near Democrat Point filled in naturally. I used to go for walks around the point there during the winter and the changes over the course of a few weeks were sometimes pretty drastic.
Rob, I heard there is a different dredge being used in Jones, not the same one as in Fire Island Inlet. Both inlets are getting dredged this winter.

The deal with the dredge hole behind Democrat Point was a case of, "it was good while it lasted." It was always a bone of contention with the State Parks Dept. because if you arrived by 4x4 you were bound by the rules of the fishing permit which are pretty prohibitive. If you arrived by boat, you weren't. While nature was well on it's way to slowly closing the entrance via shoaling, the parks dept. hastened the process by placing a large object, a boulder I think, to put the kabosh on a major thorn in their side.

According to the LNM the dredge was supposed to be there from 11Nov07 to 28Jan08 to dredge FI Inlet. It probably was diverted to Jones first.
Here is some information about the ever changing landscape of Fire Island including Democrat Point. When I was a kid and my dad would take us there on our boat. In the mid 70's they did a major dredging of the inlet and put most of the sand over around Sore Thumb, back then we used to call the body of water formed at the Point the lagoon. Does anyone remember the watch tower at Democrat Point, if you go nowdays you can still see the cement base on the east side of the lagoon.

Moriches Inlet and efforts by local communities east of Fire Island to protect their beach front with jetties have led to an interruption in the longshore drift of sand going from east to west and is blamed for erosion of the Fire Island beachfront. Between these major breaks there have been reports over the years of at least six inlets that broke through the island but have since disappeared."
