Is there anywhere in the south shore where you can actually go fast on your boat? ...and how fast?

Anywhere there's not a No Wake Zone. How fast? As fast as your boat or nerves will let you go.

The speed limit on the GSB east of Amity Cut is 45 mph. Although the posted speed limit is constantly ignord. SBC posted limit is 12 mph also ignord. Once in a while take your boat east and you'll see a different kind of boating. If possible go during the week since the bay is much easier to explore and appreciate with less traffic.

Cool. I thought the fear of sand bars would impede one's desire to 'drop the hammer'...
 
Never knew there were speed limits other than posted no wakes. I boat east of the RM bridge, usually between Tequila Jacks and the Smith Point bridge. Don't think there's a speed limit here. The North Channel is deep enough and straight enough to open 'er up.
 
I wish there was a limit. I hate when I see a go fast (no offense hyper) out in the flats going 100+ Cause you know his visibiliy is not the best and I have seen kayakers, clammers, swimmers, etc out there. High speeds should be limited to the ocean. In my opionion anything over 50 is too fast for bay areas.

Plus you need to know your waters. You hit a sandbar or a log at 50 and your gonna break some ribs!
 
When I started boating years ago the speed limit in the State Channel was 12mph. Don't think that was ever changed but just ignored.
 
In Babylon Town waters the speed limit is 12 mph in all marked channels. I have never seen it enforced but it is on the books if the Bay Constable or the cops want to bust your chops. As stated earlier 45 mph in other town waters. Any one know about Islip waters?

I see many “Go Fasts” flying across the flats between Lindenhurst and the Robert mosses bridge and other parts of the bay and believe me they are going faster than 45. As far as sand bars, they know the waters well and have been doing it for years. Mostly they are just outside of the channel. I know a couple of the guys that do the poker runs and they tell me they have all the local water knowledge to run their boats that fast. No comment, except for me, safety first.
 
My buddy owns a go-fast. Its a 35' Fountain Executioner with T/650HP motors....that he rack stores in the Anchorage. The boat will touch 90MPH. We took the boat to Freeport ( nautical mile ) one Saturday...... made it there in about 15 miniutes from Lindenhurst .....it was NOT a fun ride for me. Things happen too fast at 90 MPH.....and forget about having a beer for the ride....your holding on for dear life.

Give me a nice slow cruiser anyday.............IMHO
 
I think by fast, I meant faster than 10mph. Not necessarily 'flying'.

How fast can a hammer fall from, say a roof top of about 50 feet. Various, rubber, wood and steel composites could change the velocity.

Sorry, did you mean dropping the hammer relating to boat speed? Or was this tool time? ;)
