Duck update .........

The mommy duck returned to our marina recently, of the seven original little ones, six are still with us (and their mommy).

We heard a ruckus Sunday and looked out to see our young harbormaster calling for wire cutters. I took my tool bag with me and found him holding two of the little ones. One had a large hook sticking out of his/her neck and the other one was somehow caught on the fishing line. Cody quickly cut the first one loose, then cut the large hook in two, pulling both pieces out and setting both little ones back in the water. Their mom was watching this go on .... all three of them starting swimming around a 32 ft Bayliner, back to the other young ducks (ducklings???) when their mom stopped, turned and looked back at us for a moment, then chased her little ones down. She and the six remaining seem to live in the marina now.

Always nice to help when you can.

Glad to hear they're ok. Life is rough enough without fishhooks!
 
Yeah, the hooks reminded me of the old ... what did we call them?? Trout lines? Trot lines? Getting old...

Anyway, they are being fed by local boat owners, not sure if they will stay here during the winter. If they do, we might try to figure out where they would be safe.

The mother duck is the one that gets my immediate attention, she and I have spent some time staring at each other when she was sitting on her eggs (in our dinghy cover - which we threw away, bought a new one). I don't think they have much of a memory (another thing she and I share :) I guess), but she will sit and stare at me once in awhile. Maybe I just need a better deodorant?? :)
 
I love that momma duck stopped to turn and say thank you before taking her little ones home! What a beautiful story.......
 
I guess the marina has official mascots now. Many species of migrating birds will return to safe breeding grounds. Maybe you've heard of the swimming pool that became home to maaaaany ducks.[:P]
