I am considering having a survey done on my boat before the first year warranty expires in order to discover any problems while the full warranty is still in force. The boat also has a five year hull warranty.

Do you think it is worth the cost to do this?

Thanks!

The price of a survey is always justified by the findings. Great idear! Go for it..

I think it is a great idea. I would also have a new boat surveyed before taking delivery!

Specifically research out what problems have been known in this boat. Places to look at are thru deck holes, places where hardware is bolted, around hatches, electrical systems (signs of over heating, too small wire and corrosion). Stress cracking needs to be evaluated. Look carefully at the stringers and bulkheads, are they properly epoxied around where limber holes have been cut? Have a goal in mind when you contact the surveyor--you don't want just an insurance or value survey.

I really worry, if you don't know about the boat by now, should you have a boat?

Interesting comment Jim. Particularly when it's coming from someone who has owned a TROJAN for years - thinking the whole time that it was made by CARVER! If you're truly as "worried" about boat owners who don't know their own boats, your TROJAN would be in a parking lot somewhere on Catawba Island with a big For Sale sign posted on it.

Why post such a comment? It can't help the poster. It's condescending at best and could discourage someone from asking questions and gaining knowledge, which is the whole point of this forum.

Thanks, SLW, I was just going to ignore Jim’s comment as being not worth the effort. I know my boat very well but am not the expert that an experienced surveyor is. And, for the record, it paid off, the surveyor found a potentially serious problem that I can now get fixed under warranty. Since I have the survey report in hand I am getting no argument from my dealer.

I'm glad to hear that it worked out for you. Even if you hadn't come out ahead, the peace of mind would help offset the cost of the survey anyway.

and yeah giolic, I guess we all have new "appreciation" for that song now! :)
