Hello Again,

I am thinking of repowering my 1981 3007 aft cabin. It has dual 220 (229?) cursadors. Why anybody would chop 2 cylinders off a chevy 350 beats me. Anyhow here's my question. Does anybody know if a regualar chevy 350 will fit. I am assuming since the orginal motors are modified chevy 350's the they should match my transmission. But what about the gears and shaft size any concerns there or elsewhere? These motors are getting tired. Thank you for any help.

Scott, the 220 (HP) Crusaders are Chevy 305 (CID) V8 engines. Crusader 350s are 350cid carbureted V8s making about 260HP...

There are some other threads in recent days on this forum regarding different Crusader repower options...

yes I read those but the Crusaders 220 are only V6's. For reason they took a chevy 350 and chopped off 2 of the cylinders making them into a V6. As I understand it Crusader only made this engine for 3 years. So thats why I am wondering about using a chevy 350 instead.

As some of you know, I am considering purchasing a 1981 3007 AC. This thread has me very confused.

I thought a crusader 220 was a 305 CID V8 thap put out "220" HP. I also thought the optional crusader 270's were 350 CID V8's that put out "270" HP (which my boat has).

Could someone tell me that I am not on crack....I thought I had this all figured out and well researched!

While looking at the original model specs at:

I was wondering why they offered the 2 crusaders and one pleasurecraft for the gas options. Why the pleasurecraft? What is it's benefit over the crusaders?

Thanks for edumacating me!

That makes two of us. Like I have said I just inherited this boat. I was told by the long time mechanic of this boat that they crusader 229's. I do know that they in fact only 6 cylinders having seen them with my own eyes. That is why I am trying to find out about the chevy 350 and stuff. Now based on your link i'm wondering about those motors. (220 and 270 along with the pleasurecraft 351-4)....uuuuuuggggg...lol

Peter is correct, the 220 Crusaders are 305 chevy v8's. It's the original Carver installed engines in my 28' Mariner. I have know idea though what a 229 crusader is, or how many ponies it puts out..

I'm meeting with the mechanic in a few days to get the skinny on this boat. I wish I would have had more time on the boat with my mother. She would have been a great wealth of knowlege in regards to the motors since she had this boat since 1989. When I find out I shall surely share it. Thank for sharing.

I have a hard time believing that a 30 Carver has a pair of V-6's in it. Carver even installed the V-8 305 in their 28' Riviera model (their smallest true aft cabin).

Can you post some pictures of the engines? Maybe we can help identify them that way. All my historical Carver literature shows Crusader 220s and 270s as options on your boat, as well as mine actually. In fact, the performance curves published for my Mariner use the Crusader 220s which are 5.0L V8s. Even though the engines I have are also 220s, they are Pleasurecraft (Ford 302s) but the performance is very close. Were those numbers for V6s I'm more than sure there would be quite a difference in the performance curve.

Plus, I didn't think GM came out with a V6 that was capable of 220HP until the Vortec engines came out, which was a lot later than 1981. Perhaps this is a repower???

So Scott, did you ever figure out just what size engines you have in that boat and are they V6 or V8?

Hi All,

Sorry for the delay to this. My wife went into labor early (expecting twins in Feb) so we are now stuck in the hospital until they are born. So pictures are on hold for a few weeks.

Happy New Year,

Scott

Thanks for the grats. We decided on Cooper and Katelynn. we thought they would go better with my other set of twins. Now onto my engines. I was talking to my mechanic about these engines. We assured me that they are indeed factory original based on all the original factory paperwork in the boat. he told me that they are 1981 cursader engines 165 horse power each 229cid 6 cylinders. I have yet to see this paperwork but he is a trusted friend. So assuming this is true can anyone tell me if chevy 350 will fit straight across?

Scott, thanks for getting back to us. I still have a hard time believing Carver would put a pair of V6 Crusader engines in a 30 footer.

What does your mechanic say about this? He should have a good idea whether they will fit or not. My first thought is they should fit fine and yes, you will probably need a new transmission as well. The shaft size is probably what they used for V8's so that shouldn't be a problem. Again, I'm just taking guesses at this, no first hand knowledge.

Congratulations, Scott!!! That's wonderful news about the twins. The human ones, that is. And of course the cast iron ones too, but they're secondary ;)...

229cid 165 HP Crusaders, huh? Interesting. Well 1981 was during the Energy Crisis (the last one, that is), so maybe that explains it. Carver did offer a "displacement-only" set of engine options for my 1980 Mariner, and I think they continued that in '81 as well...

I just stumbled on this and will add my .02 worth. The 4.3L Carver used was 205 hp, that will match up with most small block 8s. It also has decent torque they need to use the same drive components as a small 8. Most chev engines will be able to switch in. GM has used the same belhousing to block pattern since 1929.

I have a pair of 4.3s in a Carver Montego. The boat loves to run in the low thirties. It'll top in the low 40s. It would be impractical to replace this set-up with small v8s, these perform as well as an 8 and use about 1/2 the gas an 8 will.

The drives on the Montego are Penta Duoprop.
