Enough with the bad weather

Yeah, it wont be good for Creek businesses if this keeps up. And even the Hudson is going to overflow its banks slightly, topping out perhaps a foot above flood stage in areas...

The Rondout is due to crest around 18 feet which is right about flood stage. So far that means we'll be okay. But who knows???

PS - you know what's interesting? The Rondout crested at record levels TWICE in 1955, first in August and then in October. It never got anywhere near that again until 4/3/2005, a date which I remember all too well!!!

The good news is that it is mostly rain. The bad news is that it is mostly rain.
Looking at 50's and pushing 60's by Friday!

Damn jacka$$e$ at NOAA did it again! Can they ever get a forecast right??? Of course they change it after everyone goes to bed. Now the Rondout Creek is forecast to hit 21.11 feet at Rosendale. That could result in a couple of feet over the banks below the dam. I am glad the low tide is at 6-something o'clock. I just hope they didn't blow it and this thing doesn't come up even higher...

I think the creek is cutting a path through my house! Just hope the pump doesn't give out, we seem to be holding at about a 1/4" in the playroom. Nice to have boater stories to read on break, also good to look around when things are going bad, thankful we are not in lower Westchester. Oh Dan, the tic toc is 53 hours and declining [:-hot]

Anticipation? Nyahhhhh!!!

Pete this is why I have been glad this happened after the spring melt. Timing is everything. The reservoir is quite high also and they are going to be dumping it for sure. If all this lined up with the melt we all would have been junk again.
BUT-
This current prediction is about 4 feet less than 2005. The run off is just getting going IMHO and the high tide happens to coincide with the predicted crest. Stay tuned?

I just got a call from the marina and the water there is in the parking lot, although not as high as a few hours back at high tide. Since the crest of 21.2 feet is predicted shortly, the forecast would seem to indicate that we're at the worst of it. But looking at the intellicast radar I'm not so sure - go to intellicast.com, do a forecast for 12601 ZIP code and then run the radar loop. There are waves of rain sweeping in from New England right into the Catskills. And, an interesting feature - cold air has wrapped completely around the storm so its SNOWING in Atlantic City!!! This is a whacky one - go figure...

I'm headed up to the creek now so I won't be able to check in for awhile. I'll let you all know how I make out!!!

Good luck Pete. It did not look too bad from the RYB point of view around 7:45 when we left for work today. But then this was about low tide.

Well, I now have water front home...the park across the street is completely flooded with water from the croton river. Leaving soon to check on the boat, high tide is 10:13am. I'm concerned water will come in through the plug that is not in. I'm glad I moved the old boat though since it was stored in a low spot.

George, good luck, stay dry! I told a friend with a similar system to get a backup pump and perhaps a genset also. Me, I only got one small leak and it's my fault...no flashing over the newly installed french doors...F-the french.

We left work early today to check on the boat and it's about 2 feet from floating. But after 2005 I requested higher ground so there's some perspective.
This flood is everything 2005 was. The Eddyville dam is a ripple in the creek.
We stopped in at the Anchorage and Julie the owner was very happy she waited instead of floating the docks. While it caused some anger, hopefully everyone realizes that this was the best call and they may actually be in the water sooner as a result since the docks will be in better repair.
Pete and co. were busy towing a boat out that floated. I imagine he's going to be pretty tired tonite.
Kingston power and several others will be lucky to keep their docks. As usual everyone waited a bit and as soon as all the docks went in the flood came. Rosita's, the Steele House and etc. are under water again.
I'd post pictures but it's all a bad recurring nightmare up here. Hopefully Feeny doesn't loose any barges this time.

Dan, are you saying the water is up past the floor of those restaurants? That is a nightmare! We are finally making headway in the playroom, and while it may be bad, I know many others would like to have my problem. The town is pumping the storm sewer down the street from us, you can hear the pump running the length of a football field away. When will enough be enough? [V]

Geo sorry to hear of your misfortune. Hopefully this stuff recedes quickly. Deb and I are working from home now, and looking out at the creek, I am amazed all of the docks on the creek are still in place. But yes, the restaurants on the north side of the creek all have water on their floors again..
The rondout reservoir is only a foot shy of the record so they must be dumping it. But the hudson seems very high this time also and that is contributing to the pile up of water around here. I have a tough time with the hudson hydrological site but it looks as though it is about 8 inches shy of the record.
This was the worst possible scenario of a crest with a high tide and high river. About the only saving grace here was that much of the snow has already melted.

Darn, guys. Geo, sorry to hear about the play room. Pete, don't over do it, bud!

We've yet to get the bad news on flooding along the Mohawk and Hudson up here but it is coming. All of the creeks are at or close to their banks. Of course all that snow in the hills is gonna melt and come on down over the next two or three days.

If it were snow it would be 4'+ in Albany.

Well guys and gals, this turned out to be some storm. We spent all day Sunday as well as Sunday night on the boat. We saw several high tides but they only just started to go into the parking low. They did evacuate several homes and trailer park. The winds where coming out of the south so the tides where higher than normal. Each tide got higher than the previous on. We where up most of the night since the winds shifted to North east.

We ended up having to pull the Caryl-d forward due to line stretch as well as retie several other boats due to pounding the poles. We retied one of your lines hogan since you started to hit the pole. We also had an open boat from the Dec that was starting to go down due to bilge pump not working and a very heavy load of fish nets in the stern. I rebalanced there load and put an electric pump in it and managed to keep it floating. At 6am Monday it was stone dry of water but the way the waves where coming in the load shifted and swamped the boat.

Ended up going to work but came back for Monday mornings high tide which was the highest I saw. Water was out to the front gate. Had to wade through about 2 foot of water to get to boat. I was going to go back Monday nights high tide but not feeling well so came home. Guess Ill find out later how the tide was, hoping the north winds helped blow it out but they did calm down quite a bit so who knows...

Butch, thanks for looking out for my boat.

I tried to get in yesterday at 5:50, but they were gone and the gate was locked.

That's a scary thought not being able to get to the boat to be able to check on it. Don't they have a badge reader of something so you folks can get in??

No problem Mike...Dan we have an electronic gate but with all the boats in storage yet the gate is blocked so its off...

Ok, it's just early season issues.
Looking out at the creek fortunately it seems that the only real problem is E dock because the outside T snapped. Maybe one finger on F dock. The other marinas up stream seem ok but I know Pete was working hard at the Anchorage. I hope they were able to maintain some order up there.

The folks on the Hudson may be in for more high water with the tides from what the hydrology reports depict.

"Pete and co. were busy towing a boat out that floated. I imagine he's going to be pretty tired tonite."

Hi guys. Yeah Dan, it was some night. Mark and I were out there for most of it, along with some of the guys from the marina. Earlier in the day we had three boats float off, so we put them out in that little cove between us and Rondout Bay. Then we checked into the Marriott Residence Inn on 9W (nice hotel BTW, just pricey) and caught some shuteye, then returned for the overnight high tide. Wouldn't you know it this one was worse than the earlier one! A fourth boat floated off, then we turned our attention to Mark's Sea Ray and a couple of others that were teeter-tottering on their stands everytime the wind blew. 4 of us climbed aboard Mark's boat and just sat there as human ballast, afraid to move because we thought any twitch would break the boat free. A couple of other guys decided to ballast their boats by opening the drain plugs or seacocks and letting some water in to keep the boats as solid as possible on the stands...

SOMEHOW, this worked. We didn't lose any other boats. Our worst nightmare would have been for a big boat like Mark's to break loose and start knocking all the other ones off like dominoes. If the damn creek came 1 inch higher we'd easily have had another 4 loose boats...

My Carver was fine, never budged. My little Glastron was the first one that floated off, but at least I was smart enough to put the plugs in, so we towed it out and it became the start of our little impromptu raft up out in the creek...

We did have some fun at least - everybody was jovial about things - gallows humor I guess. Mark and I slept in a nice king sized bed. He was mad because he had asked for two queens. I told him maybe the girl at the desk thought he said we were two queens looking for a king [:-mischievous] ...

This is amazing, two floods like this in three years. Some of the other creek marinas lost a few docks from what I've heard. But all the boats seem to have made it. Rondout Bay is a mess, but Larry was advertising "high ground" storage last year, and let me tell you, his high ground was excellent - none of the boats up there so much as got wet...

Glad to hear all the rest of you guys did okay. Butch, that had to be scary out there at the height of the storm...

See ya later...
