I continue to hear horror stories from the East Coast about problems with ethanol. Do the marines use E-10 or regular?

So far some may be E-5, but most a regular. But Arnold wants California to go to E-85, so get prepared!

California gas is currently 5.6% Ethanol, and I'm trying to get more info from my Employer (Chevron) of what's expected down the pipe, and I'll post that info when I get it.

I've said a million times - Ethanol has no benefit for (gasoline) boaters. Were lucky to have 5.6 rather than 10%, and I hope that doesn't change anytime soon. But...

I know the Ethanol is very hard on the rubber used on olders outboards. Years ago, I was pumping the prime ball on a Johnson OB fuel line. When I was done, my hands were black with disolved rubber. Later, the fuel line and parts of the fuel pump failed. Then replacement pump and lines seemed to hold up OK.

I'm on Bethel Island and my marina (Chevron) doesn't know the percentage of Ethanol in their gas. Any word from your employer?

I'm trying to get more info on what we as Californian's can expect dow the road, but have not gotten any word back yet. Major shutdowns and a recent fire have everyone a little busy I think...

I'll be sure to past as soon as I get any info.

MM,
That sure would be helpful. I heard that ethanol had a 25% lower fuel economy that regular gas but I didn't catch what percentage of alcohol they were referring to. Any insight?

Charlie,

I don't know. It may that ethanol (pure?) has 25% less energy than gasoline. I know it has less, but sure how much...

It's interesting that the Chevron website says "The State of California is deviating from this guideline in 1992. State regulations mandate the use of oxygenated gasoline throughout the State (not just in carbon monoxide non-attainment areas), but specify a lower oxygen content of 1.8% to 2.2%."
It also said that it is reformulated only during the winter months????

I've checked the Chevron website, and it's not always up to date. Was that dated 1992?

For a really good thread on ethanol, with some very knowledgable participants, check out this thread! But read all 6 pages...

Thanks. I am going to get a test kit from the fuelguy, the only one on the forum that seemed to know what he was talking about. Others were talking about stopping water condensation in the tanks (which can only be an absolute max of 0.46 oz with an empty 200 gallon tank under perfect conditions for condensation from a huge and sudden temperature rise - never happens)
