Fairlee Creek -Off Limits

We went to Fairlee Creek expecting a few days of relaxing on the sandy spit of land opposite Great Oak Landing Marina and after I rounded the turn into the creek I see a dozen No Trespassing signs on both sides of the beach. First Ordinary Point and now Fairlee Creek. Now everyone will cram into Still Pond.

Thankfully, only those with shallow drafts. That'll keep the numbers down some. Plus, you won't find the majority of the "Fairlee" crowd in the "Pond" as there's no bar!
 
If you have ever wondered who owns that land at Fairlee, public records show that a 750 acre parcel was split into five lots back in 1986, apparently between family members. I believe lot 5, which is a 75 acre parcel, contains that spit of land that everyone backs to. There is no house on lot 5 and the owner has an out-of-state mailing address.

In Maryland, private property starts at the mean high tide line, so legally you must stay below the high tide line to avoid trespassing. Additionally, “offshore” is defined as any place on waters of Maryland State below the mean high tide.

Nonetheless, I believe that the owners of the Fairlee Farm have been wonderful for turning a blind eye to the use of their property by others for all these years.

I haven’t been to Fairlee for a few weeks so I haven’t seen the new signs, but Great Oaks marks the area every year in preparation for their fireworks display.

The new signs probably replace old signs, which replaced older signs, and so on. That beach has been posted "No Trespassing" for decades. Some people use the signposts to tie their docklines to.

I recall, back in the '80s, Glenmar Sailing Assn, out of Middle River, used to hold corn roasts on that beach, all weekend long. They were quite an affair.
 
We took our first trip to Fairlee Creek last week. Gotta confess, it's not my cup o' tea. Crowded and noisy. If I wanted that, I could save $150 in fuel and gone to the neighborhood pool! Is Still Pond any less crazy? Unfortunately, I am stuck with weekends, since I'm sure weekdays are much nicer. (PS: I never saw any "No Trespassing" signs.)

I'm with you. Haven't been to Fairlee in a couple years. If you want a relaxing day, Still Pond is your place. Some weekends can get a little crowded but not like Fairlee. Also, very quiet and nice view of the bay from the outter anchorage.

You shouldn't have any problem if you stay close to the daymarks. I always leave 'em to port when entering Stillpond. After the turn to starboard (past the CG station) you gotta stay within 20 feet from the end of the private docks to be in the deep channel. The anchorage area depths range from 3-10'.
I would be cautious about going very far upstream past the anchorage because depths get pretty skinny (3-5') after the turn to port. It's nice for exploring by dinghy, though.

Well, here's the rumor on the Fairlee Creek "NO TRESPASSING" deal.

If you've ever been there, you know people use the peninsula for all kinds of partying. Drinking, fires, campouts, BBQ's, etc...

Well, if you've ever been ON the peninsula, you know it is pretty trashed. Seems some boaters feel the need to smash bottles, leave their trash, old beat up grills, etc... all over the beach.
Nice.

Anyway, a boater was up there, which IS private property (so they really were there illegally), and cut their foot on someone else's broken beer bottle.
They sued the owner of the land.
Really nice.

So, the owner had no choice BUT to put up the No Trespassing signs, because apparently he lost the case!

Talk about "Anchor Trash".

Well every weekend I was up at Fairlee, including last weekend, the people are there, the bonfires and the trash when they leave. I saw DNR kicking people off and had them remove lounge chairs but when the DNR is gone they are back. The posted signs are all torn down and the posts used for the aft line. Business as usual.

Came in on one engine around "The Cut".

Scary on a good day, but with one engine, YIKES!

Anyway, that is the rumor I have heard about the NO Trespassing signs. Makes sense when you think about it.

Personally, if I owned the land, I would invest in a 4 wheeler and come down and kick people off too. Or, tell them they can come back when they clean up the beach! If everyone wants to stay and party, take a couple of extra bags of trash back whith them. If not, then get out! (LOL).

Did you do a 360°? I have seen beak boats come in and get spun around.
