Yesterday we decided to take a fall run a little ways up the Hudson.
Round trip from Huntington, we have a 5 day window & as of now we expect to be leaving Saturday 9/19.
Looking for suggested stops as well as marinas for over nights.
Also need to stop near Marist college. It's just north of Poughkeepsie so a Marina or town dock somewhere around there
I expect we'll stay at Liberty Landing one night

We can easily cruise at 21/24knots depending

How far up the Hudson would you like to venture? For Marist, your best bet will be Shadows - 65nm from Liberty Landing. It's a six minute cab/Uber from the marina. I've stayed at Shadows a few times now and while it's on the river and thus exposed, things should be quieter that time of year. Dockmaster Captain Keith will put you on the outside and it's easy in, easy out on the face dock, obviously docking into the current. He'll even offer to pick you up breakfast sandwiches and coffee on his way in in the morning. It's a pretty spot to be at night and the restaurant was good when I've been there.

If you want to continue another 20nm north, Kingston is a good place to stop on the protected Rondout Creek. Stay at the Maritime Museum docks if they have space. Floating docks at the foot of the waterfront town with a couple of decent restaurants (Ship to Shore, Mariner's Harbor). Kingston City Marina is an option if they have space which is limited for bigger boats, although I don't love it. You'd be on a noisy aluminum dock right under a busy bridge with people constantly walking by if it's on the weekend. If you can't get into the Maritime, we really like Rondout Yacht Basin. While not right in town, they've done a terrific job with the place. Stayed there this summer for the first time in years and really enjoyed it. You'd be on an easily approached floating face dock right next to a sister-ship of your Carver if it's there. Nice park-like setting and good people. The small but terrific on-site restaurant was also a pleasant surprise.

Shake it up on the trip south and try Half Moon Bay Marina in Croton. While I haven't stayed there in years it continues to get very good reviews. You can easily run home from there in a longer day. I don't want to stir up a hornets nest by advising against Haverstraw Marina but read the reviews that are out there. Unfortunately I have found the negative ones to be accurate in many years of stopping there because of the convenience of its location and ability to accommodate my size boat. For me it has always been a utility stop and I know how to set my expectations. Apologies to people who love it but that is based on my experiences.

If you want suggestions further north or need more guidance just say the word.

I second what Sierra says about Kingston and Half Moon Bay. We usually make an October Hudson Trip and really enjoy Kingston. I’ve stayed at both the Maritime Museum Dock and the Kingston City Dock. Both are nice, but I like the Maritime Dock more. Call ahead for a reservation. Go to their website and join for a docking discount and entrance to the small museum. Not much in it, but it’s still pretty cool.
Our favorite restaurants in Kingston are Mariner’s Harbor, Savonna’s and last year we found a little diamond in the rough called Downtown Cafe.
Make sure you bring whatever basics you need with you because there isn’t a supermarket in walking distance.
I usually fuel up at Roundout Creek Yacht Basin. Nice place, but we never stayed there because it is on the opposite side of Roundout Creek from the town.
We stayed at Half Moon Bay Marina last October and really liked it. Being on the east side of the river gets you the ability to watch the sunset over the west side. Really nice! Not as protected as Kingston, but not bad at all. Not much in walking distance, but there are supermarkets and restaurants a short cab ride away.
We’ve stayed at Liberty Landing a couple of times. Very protected, fuel available and nice place. Great views of the lower Manhattan skyline and a short Uber ride to Hoboken with plenty of restaurants and bars. We never spent any time in Jersey City, but my daughter’s friend told me that there are some good restaurants there too. We don’t bother going in to the city from there because we go in to the city often enough by car.
While we”ve never stayed in Newburgh, several people have told me recently that it’s a good place for an overnight stop right at the waterfront. I’ve heard there are a few good restaurants right there.
We recently met a couple from Sleepy Hollow who told us that Tarrytown might be a spot we would be interested in stopping, but I haven’t gathered any info on it yet.

Hi Andy, I wish our little boat club could handle your boat but it can't. If you do decide on Half Moon Bay, let me know I live about a half mile from there and our marina is just up the road. You are welcome to borrow my car if you need it. It's true, the restaurants and ShopRite supermarket are about .75 mile walk, up hill.
There are two nice restaurants in Ossining and Shattemuck Boat club has nice docks, consider those. Personally, I'd avoid liberty landing but, I work in NYC daily so I'm spoiled. When we went to your marina, we stopped in Norwalk then took the Harlem river to the Hudson, ~4hrs at 16knots.

Shadows is the place in Poughkeepsie, but I don't think they have fuel so plan accordingly. It's alot of steps to the restaurant but it's very nice!

Again - let me know if you overnight near Croton/Ossining, maybe I can get that tour of the new ride!

Thx for the info guys and i hope it keeps coming
Chris, I'll let u know who, where, when as soon as we nail it down- Love to have you guys aboard for a cocktail or 2

We lived in Kingston and will always recommend Ship to Shore http://shiptoshorehudsonvalley.com/. If you want to walk up hill (LOL) there is Armadillo. At least you can roll down the hill back to the boat. Shrimp stuffed jalapenos were always a fav there.
We never thought Mariner's was worth it but they may have good happy hours etc.. Savona's can work but again, we will always prefer ship to shore. Wine lover wed. was always a favorite at ship to shore and we walked over the bridge from the town home on many a wed..

While we docked at RYB for YEARs, I will recommend something on the other side for convenience sake. It has been a while but taxi service was always slow to respond. Perhaps Uber has made the RYB a better stop I dunno.

Anything on the Hudson proper is exposed and you may be exposed to rocking at night. If you make it to Poughkeepsie I am thinking Kingston is a short hop beyond for you at cruise speed.

Ask Walshi about mowing the meadows.

Now thats funny

If you are stopping in NYC area, Liberty Landing should be your choice.

Up river, you have Haverstraw on the west side and Half Moon Bay on the east side, just north of where we had the BE raft-up.

Unfortunately, Haverstraw has gone downhill, the docks are not cleaned and there is no employee to be found after 5 PM. Dock hands are sparse. If they put you on silver dock, it's about a 1/4 mile walk to the office. The restaurant is good.

Up river, stop at Shadows, the dockmaster is great and you are a short distance from the Walkway over the Hudson. Only drawback is that the current RIPS through the marina. Your size boat might be put on the outside, without any protection from waves and wakes. Good restaurant right on premises.

Kingston is always a good stop, for the reasons others have posted.

If you stop at HM, let us know.

I used to love the fall trips to see the leaves changing but last year Haverstraw gave us two weeks notice to get out at the end of the season or start paying daily transient rates. In all of the years there, they never enforced the 10/15 date until they got a new manager. That’s what started the exodus of boats along with what Hogan said. Now I will get the chance coming home from my new home on the sound for winterization next door to Haverstraw.

Word is that Safe Harbor is taking over Haverstraw Marina. If true, there will be a lot of positive changes!

Safe Harbor has about 75 marina's today I'm told with plans to grow to 200 within the next couple of years

To really enjoy peak foliage on the river you have to go around Nov 1. River is warmer than surrounding areas.

We never made the fall trip up the Hudson because of a failed port Coolant pump.
So to get away we took the last week for some time around the Keys and just came home from 90 degree weather

Well now I’m sitting in the salon at 29 degrees outside and in 5 hours will be shoving off to our first stop Jersey City for the night.
Then off to Charleston over the next week plus. This is one year I don’t have to winterize!

29 degrees does provide some incentive. Have a safe trip!

Have a great trip. keep us updated on the adventure.
