Two teens found a body floating not far from a jet ski July 6 while cruising the San Joaquin Delta waters near Bull Frog Marina.
“When I first saw him I was scared and didn’t know what to do,” said J.D. Skilling, 17, of Discovery Bay. “I had a weird feeling in my stomach, but then felt like I had to save him.”
J.D. and his friend Shane Seaton found no pulse on the man, whom they later learned was 32-year-old Discovery Bay resident Rueben Lopez.
The boys were out riding their own jet skis when J.D. spotted a jet ski floating on the water’s surface. When the two reached the object, it appeared the handlebars were smashed.
They proceeded to look for the owner, figuring the person might have simply abandoned the destroyed watercraft, but what they found was a floating body.
“Since our cell phones didn’t have signals, Shane drove to the levee to flag down a car,” said J.D. “Then we saw something floating about 400 yards away and couldn’t tell what it was – it turned out to be the owner of the jet ski.”
Shortly afterwards, Lopez’s 14-year-old son arrived back at the scene of the accident with his uncle.
According to the stories the two teens gathered at the scene, it appears Lopez, who had his 6-year-old son riding with him, had made a sharp left turn on his jet ski without realizing his other son’s jet ski was in close vicinity. Tragically, the 14-year-old son was not able to avoid contact with his father’s watercraft and ended up riding his jet ski over his father. Lopez died at the scene and the 6-year-old incurred minor injuries.
Sgt. Sam Malcolm from the Boating Safety Unit for San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office reported the incident at 7 p.m. and said it was an unfortunate accident.
“The investigation is still ongoing,” said Malcolm. “This is the first jet ski fatality for 2007, but so far we’ve had six power watercraft accidents this year, where four involved injury.
“You have to be careful on jet skis, especially if it’s your first time on a jet ski,” he added. “The minimum age for driving a jet ski is 16.”
Shane said this tragedy opened his eyes to reality.
“It taught me to be more safe on jet skis. Me and my friends have had near misses before, but now I feel I need to be even more careful.” "
