Why not stay on you boat?

I know Camping is fun but I would save that for upstate in the woods near a lake or stream. When at WH we take hikes a night through the Camp Site area, and I must say it’s not the country. And as pointed out it is very very buggy.

And seeing some of the “Campers” that get off the Ferry…………….[:-shake]

JMHO…. But have fun, it will be an adventure.

Just in case JMHO = just my humble opinon :---)

Ink, don't know have not met you yet. :)

No not scary (well mostly) … Just joking a bit.

We usually dock on the B land where the ferry people walk past. So you really get to see who are your non-boating neighbors.

Many of the campers are with groups of under privileged or handicapped. It’s nice to see them getting a break, but sad to see the struggle they are going though.

The funny ones are the “know it all” teenagers who come unprepared and barely get their stuff down the dock and on to the trails. Then after a rain see them coming back looking worse than the homeless.

Another funny one is seeing the grown men dressed in green hot pants with socks up to their knees giving advice to their troops as their canteen and sleeping bag rolls off into the water. (That is a true story)

I sit on my boat or on the dock with an adult drink just watching the parade.

Maybe more funny than a busy boat ramp on a weekend.
 
Is it safe though? I will have my family with me...

Maybe staying on the boat's better.

I can’t promise the future, but I have never heard of any major incidents that would cause you to feel unsafe. Occasionally you will see a few staggering campers or boaters traversing the pathway hooting it up a bit.

You may even see someone holding a friend has he is hanging off the side of rail feeding the deer with his evening dinner.

Seriously though, I've never heard of any safety issues at Watch Hill.
 
There can be a great deal of wind at Watch Hill and it is always fun to watch the tents blow over. Not sure if people are in them or not.

Most of the wind comes from the boaters, in the way of hot air.

Funny there was a rumor that there are many tents left each weekend.

Why are there more ferry tickets going to WH, but less returning? How did these campers get off the Island? Where did they go? Ummm,
 
Very interesting; has anyone ever made the trip tip watch hill from NJ; let's say Sandy Hook? Is the easiest way to get there running out side? It seems that you might be able to go inside at the East Rock Away inlet. Very interested on what kind of trip this would be in a 30ish foot cruiser?

Ur better off going in Jones Inlet... more direct and faster...

its roughly a 2 hr trip from Jones inlet... depending on ur cruise...

On a calm day it would be a nice trip from the Sandy Hook area. When we do our Hudson River trips it takes me about 2 hours from Fire Island Inlet to the tip of Manhattan cruising around 23 knots. I imagine the trip from Sandy Hook would be similar. From the inlet it would be another hour, maybe a little less, to Watch Hill. Going through FI inlet would avoid the narrow channels and no wake zones to the west.

We go there (FI) frequently from Piermont, NY.
I go the ocean route whenever possible.
Last year I went on the inside starting from East Rockaway just because the wind was coming directly from the south, the waves were probably 3 maybe 3 1/2 which is fine but every time a hit a wave I got splashed in the face with spray and it got to be like water torture.

Inside was very smooth but it takes a lot longer and you have to pay more attention.

I have a 26' 260 Sundancer.
