I had to go through there last Sunday after pulling a guy off the east side of the east bar. He tried to cut across heading out and got stuck. Key to getting out is stay north, hugging the beach along and to the west of the sore thumb. You have to head further west, almost to the flag pole at Overlook beach till you reach buoy 6 before making an arcing turn south and head to buoy 4A. Once there you can see the marked channel that takes you south and out to open water. As always, stay vigilant, know the wind/tide/current scenario. Fire Island is very navigable but it is a lot different than in past years and very different from what you may remember. I wasn't glued to the sounder, but I don't remember seeing anything less than 10 feet when I went through.
