Filled diesel $ 2.27 a gallon in Camden Maine, prices coming down all over except for those who are unwilling to share the savings of recent oil price collapse. Join ActiveCaptain, it's free, but they maintain an active list of fuel pricing up and down the coast.
Around here (Maryland) they're one in the same. Marinas sell "heating oil" for diesel applications as it has no road tax on it. Red dye is added to both "off-road" diesel and "heating oil" for detection purposes on highway vehicles. Farm equipment, marine engines, and locomotives typically run on "dyed diesel fuel".
I asked because someone at my marina said it it dirty diesel for home heating as opposed to clean diesel for boats. Glad to,hear it is the same as the marina fuel.
Different things can be sold as "heating oil" such as Diesel #1, Kerosene, K-1, Fuel Oil #4, etc. The important thing when buying fuel for a Diesel engine is making sure it is Diesel #2. I just mentioned this thread/topic to friend of mine who owns a Mid-Atlantic area fuel polishing company. He said "Diesel #2 is Diesel #2 no matter what color it is".
