First overnight on the river

Thanks, I've learned something today. Guess I've always had belt and suspenders when it come to VDS's.

I know the regs regarding bells, the Inspecting Officer was trying to enforce a NY State reg, and was witholding the sticker without the bell.

Our 18' boat was boarded and inspected by the US Coast Guard off Key Largo FL several years ago. I said I had no flares and he said they are only required at night. I should have got that in writing to show the marine police here.

Lights to be displayed.

I didnt get my sticker one time n my 30 footer because NY State Nav Law requies a bell.

If this hasn't changed, NY State navigation law requires vessels over 26 feet to carry a bell:

* 9. Motor boats of classes two, three and four as classified and defined by subdivision one of section forty-three of this article, shall carry a bell.

1. Vessels classified. For the application of this section vessels shall be divided into classes as follows:
Class A. Less than sixteen feet in length.
Class 1. Sixteen feet or over and less than twenty-six feet in length.
Class 2. Twenty-six feet or over and less than forty feet in length.
Class 3. Forty feet or over and not more than sixty-five feet in length.
Class 4. Over sixty-five feet in length.
Class 5. Rowboats and canoes.

The way I understand the law, a bell was required for a class 2 vessels up until 4/1/2003. Not required after that date.
