Hey all,
No, I've never owned a boat before, but because of this I am having troubles getting insured. I'm currently looking at buying a 36' sailboat. I've taken ASA Courses, I've Chartered, I've sailed friends' boats, so I think I have enough operating experience. And now, I have saved enough to get the boat I've wanted for years. However, because I don't have previous boat "ownership experience", I am getting denied by some insurance agencies.
Well, you all had "your first boat". Do I need to buy an 8' plastic tub at Walmart and work my way up? I think this is all absurd. I know in the automotive area, they charge higher rates if you don't have insurance history (first time drivers, or people that let their insurance lapse). Why doesn't marine insurance industry do this?
I've had denies from Progressive and United Marine Underwriters. I am waiting to hear from BoatUS.
Does anyone have an insurance agency to recommend for first time owners?
cheers,
Dan
