Hi everyone,

As some of you know i'm pretty new to this. This year was my first season. I've learned a tremendous amount....mostly thanks to the people here. Hell, i'm at the point where i dont ALWAYS crash into my slip or dock box while docking!

Before i pull the boat out of the water i'm taking the wife and some friends to see the foliage.

Anyone care to give me some guidance?

I'm coming out of Worlds Fair Marina in Flushing Bay. So, i'm going to come out towards Manhattan and head North up the East River and go around the northern tip of manhattan into the Hudson.

Anything to worry about thee? I'm in a 28' Rinker.

Then i'm going to head North up the Hudson. How far North do i have to go to start enjoying the views?

Can anyone point me to a place to fuel up as i go North so that i'm good to come back down?

This is going to be a Friday and this time of year i'm not sure, but anywhere to pull in for Lunch?

And lastly, i've been trying to learn how to use the Tides best to my fuel economy advantage, but i still just dont get it.

I pulled this tide info

Tides for Spuyten Duyvil Creek ent., N.Y. starting with November 7, 2008.

Day High Tide Height Sunrise Moon Time % Moon
/Low Time Feet Sunset Visible

F 7 High 3:33 AM 3.3 6:34 AM Set 12:02 AM 57
7 Low 9:55 AM 1.1 4:45 PM Rise 1:38 PM
7 High 3:36 PM 3.6
7 Low 10:26 PM 0.6

Any guidance and advice would be appreciated.

thanks,
dan

contact the Spuyten Duyvil bridge on channel 13 to request an opening. The views start right there.

Once you get out of the Harlem river, head north on the west side of the river and you will find a Alpine boat basin
http://marinas.com/view/marina/176

that sells gas cheap (it's in NJ) it's across the river from the big blue building.

As you head up the river, stay in the middle, as it gets very shallow just below Piermont.

Just iner the TZ bridge, on your right, you can eat at Tarrytown Marina.

Heading north, you will see beautiful foliage. You might want to go all the way to Newburgh and eat there at Torches.

How long is the trip, if more than a day, you might want to go to Rondout.

Thanks Hogan!

It's only a day trip, so wont be able to wonder too far!

So even for my little 28' Rinker i'll need a Bridge opening.....wow.....first time!

Thanks,
dan

Check your capabilities of range and amount of travel time and see if you can do a day trip to Tarrytown Marina. You might get lucky and do lunch at the Striped Bass? Then head back down. If you are cruising at 20 knots and better I don't think I would be overly concerned with tide issues.

It should take you about an hour to the Hudson, another hour to Haverstraw and a third hour to Newburgh at your speed.

Unless you can get under a 4' bridge, you'll need an opening.

Watch for floating debris and people dropping things off the bridges in the east river!

dan - if it's a calm day, i'd recommend heading south down the east river and going around the battery to see the statue of liberty for a bit. then head up the hudson and have lunch at tarrytown. going back, i'd take the shortcut through the harlem river. whenever i bring guests along, they're amazed at seeing the city from the water, especially the east river.

Indeed seeing the statue of liberty from the water is very impressive. NY harbor can get quite choppy so if you are ok with that, or the water is calm (and it happens) go for it.

Thanks Everyone! I'm really looking forward to it! I've gone South towards lady liberty before and it can get really choppy there, but it is so worth it.

And you are right, i should go that way for this trip too! I'll cut through the Harlem River on return. Who the hell put a 4' bridge across the river anyway? Would a little arch have hurt?

Thanks,
dan

It's a railroad bridge, Amtrak uses it to get in and out of Penn Station.

Actually, the trip on the train on the Hudson line is quite beautiful, a nice way to commute.

Actually i've heard that from many people. We spend a week in the mountains every year and some people take the train up/down and rave about it.

on your way down the harlem river from the hudson, be mindful of a few no wake zones. the signs are posted on some of the smaller bridges and if you're up on plane, you have to either throttle back FAST or continue though them on plane. none of the bridges will need to be opened except for the one at the spuyten duyvil that takes you into the harlem river itself. also, a few of the bridges have two smaller spans you can go under (one to your port side and one to your starboard) and a few of the channels beneath the spans are closed. there are signs posted, but again, if you're on plane, you may not have a lot of time to react. when traveling in the harlem river from the spuyten duyvil to the east river, all of your port side spans should be open.

one final caution.....the circle line boats in the harlem river (and anywhere else you may encounter them) obey their own, mysterious rules of the road. the only one i've ben able to decipher so far is "i don't see any other boats in MY river so i'm going where i please." give these guys plenty of space and you'll be fine.

Thanks Bruce! I really appreciate the information!

I've noticed my few times in the East River that the Circle Lines and the Water Taxis and such just dont care about anyone! I just don't get it!

Thanks,
dan

Alpine Boat basin is no longer open - they close on Oct 31st - the only reliable source for gas is at Haverstraw Marina and you should call ahead to see what time they close. As the season winds to an end, they often close early, or only open on an appointment basis. They are easy to find on the Internet. Taarrytown Marina may or may not be open - someone from there may have accurate info. Good luck - its a great trip. Just watch for floating debris in the river - especially after a high tide.

Haverstraw's listed hours of operation is 9-5 but I'd still call ahead to double check.

I believe someone posted above that they closed 10/31 for the season.
