I am not a fisherman, but my wife has been after me to try it. I qualify for the free license but don't know if it is fresh water or salt water or both. It is pretty confusing for someone who hasn't fished in almost 50 years. My wife asked me if I would still have to buy tags for Salmon or any other fish. Any ideas?

Thanks...Dave

Dave, After a certain age, some states(Florida) do not require a fishing licence.

Thanks Joe, I didn't even know that. I was raised pretty poor but an uncle gave me his old tackle box and I had one lure. A "Lazy Ike" I think it was. Went fishing on the Arkansas River while they were building the Keystone Dam at Tulsa and left my gear by a log. I was busy doing something but when I came back, my gear was gone. Haven't fished since. It has always been "too boring" for me. I know it can be fun, but I just never got into it.

Fast forward 49 years and my wife wants me to fish. She doesn't know how and I can't help her. We have a couple of friends who will do that, but we would both have to buy equipment.
Being disabled has slowed me down so I thought I might try it.

Joe, do you remember the "Lazy Ike"? Is it still around?

Dave, the Lazy Ike sounds familier but dont know if its still around.
Boring is somtimes a good thing if it means getting a chance to relax. Wish I could find more time to relax.

Yeah Joe, relaxing can be good.

California's fishing laws are pretty complicated from first glance. My 5 year sportfishing license needs a stamp for this fish and that fish and so on. I hope the fish can tell the difference. Another friend says you can fish something or other if you don't have the barbs on the hook.

Wonder if I need a license for a generator and electrodes over the side? :) I saw that on the Discovery Channel or something when they were hunting the "Fish-Zilla". 5000 watt generator and electrodes over the side. It worked.

My Grandfather told me that they used HandGrenades when he was in the Army in Germany.

He stopped that practice when he missed the water and the Grenade landed on a rock. He had to dive for cover.

Grandpas that were in the war always have great stories for us kids.

Joe, life is interesting at times. My Grandfather was born in 1871. My Dad's grandfather was born in 1831. My grandparents traveled in a wagon to Oklahoma and were in the land rush.

I have been writing funny stories in emails to our kids. I get energetic and write about my days growing up, what we did before Disneyland and so on. Some of the funny things that happened in my twenty years in the AF.

I know almost nothing about my parents growing up. I don't want my kids to be in that position. My dad played ball with me one time in 1953. For about thirty minutes. I don't think he knew how to play. He dad died when he was six. They all worked in the lead mines.

Before I forget, the doctor signed the forms for my free five year sportfishing license. Now all I need is to get a buddy to show us what gear we will need. A few said to hit the garage sales.

Well, a friend who does not fish anymore said I could have his tackle box and the one reel he still has.

We inherited two rods and two reels with the boat.
I was told the LONG cane pole is for "gunk-holing" and the other is ok for freshwater fish.

After listening to the fishermen at my marina talk, I think a 5/8 nylon line, with a hook made from 3/8 steel would be appropriate. The bait would be a leg of lamb or pork roast. :)

"Lazy Ike?"
I had a few of those. I dont know why they ceased to exist though.

For Trout, if your gonna cast a lure, you cant beat the small flatfish.
Fishing from the bank, use eggs n' worms or something called "Power bait".
There aint nuthin' absolutly nuthin' as enjoyable as laying back in the warm grass and ketching a good nap while the fish go about ignoring your bait.

Link up with a boat owner. They'll wheel you dont to the boat and tumble you in.
Go out and catch bottom fish or salmon on his nickel.
I took a guy out once that didn't have legs. It sure didn't slow him down when it came to catching fish.

Fishing can be a bit boring. I don't care if I catch anything. Basically all I am doing is taking the worms out for a swim.

DLL,

I'm in Riverboat Marina next door and fish the delta about every other weekend out of my 34 Californian. You and your wife would be more than welcome to join me for a fun day of fishing the local waters. I'd be happy to show you what we use locally for stripers and sturgeon. I'm not a guide...I just do this for fun.

I wouldn't put too much hope into catching salmon this year or next due to recent closures for saltwater anglers. If you'd like to talk about it, feel free to call me at 916-367-9003 or email kalan2000 at comcast.net
