Mears Point Marina and Great Oak landing are each offering 30 free slips for the rest of 2009. They are only available for boats over 35' on a first come first served basis.

Links appear to be down... not incorrect, just not working at the moment. Regardless, seems like a marketing deal; they have empty slips so entice some larger vessels in free for a couple of month in hopes that they'll enjoy the experience and become paying slipholders for the next few years. Nothing to loose and only some new slipholders to possibly gain.
 
I don't see anything about that offer on either website. How do you get it?
 
I got a mailing from the marina as I am am a slipholder. For their special offers they normaly advise existing slip holders so they can pass it on to friends first, so I posted here to give members a jump on competition if they can use the opportunity.
 
My question is, how would you obtain one, just call up and ask?
 
I do get tired of this minimum length crap. We've got a week off coming up and we were thinking about stopping in Oxford. The last time I was there we stayed at Mears. Due to this, we'll anchor or find another marina. Heck, it's not like I can go to Great Oak without being abused by the 35+ footer "boaters" there. The last time we anchored in Fairlee, we arrived on a Friday afternoon. We went completely across from the marina to about 50 yards from shore. Things were fine until about 11am Saturday when some Mears-based idiot in some ugly aft-cabin thing tried to anchor right in front of us. He dropped just enough rode to touch the bottom. Wind was pushing him toward us. We moved. He then made another boat move as he dragged over their anchor spot. Come 6pm, he hauled up anchor and headed back to the marina. Pathetic to say the least. Let Mears cater to that crowd and I'll stay well far away.

While the names are similar, I do not think they are currently owned by the same company.

Thanks, I was mistaken by associating Mears Yacht Haven (Oxford) with the other Mears marinas. MYH in Oxford is run by Coastal Properties, not Meisel & Cohen Properties which owns and runs Great Oak, Mears Point, and Annapolis. So I can go back to Oxford without a chip on my shoulder! Although I still don't deal well with this minimum length crap. I also skip St. Michaels Marina because of it (opting for Miles River Yacht Club or Higgins instead). There are always other choices where there aren't minimums (except for Old Bahama Bay on West End, but the Admiral prefers a slip after crossing the gulf stream, so I have to make an exception there :-)

I won't bother anybody with my Harrington Harbour rant, but it is nice to vent once and a while.
 
Kurt, the solution is quite simple, get a bigger boat.
 
I currently don't need or want a bigger boat. This one's perfect for now for the following reasons:

1 - Category B Ocean Rated (winds to 41 knots and significant wave heights up to 13 feet high)

2 - Positive Flotation (notice I don't like to say "unsinkable"!)

3 - We can trailer it from MD to FL in 24 hours.

4 - It's paid for.

5 - 3.5 gallons per hour!

Remember, catamarans usually have 20-30% more interior room than an equivalent-sized monohull.

Wes, no need to cry, unless I'm forced into a marina I don't like, which certainly isn't the case at your place (see you tomorrow).

Art, was that to me? Sorry, might be heat stroke, but I don't get it?
 
The reason they are advertising for 35' and up only is that they have no problems filling the slips that are under 35'. Prices get pretty steep at the higher lengths (I pay $6700 and there is a lot open at that price), and that is why they have so many open. The idea is that if you come to Mears and use the amenities etc. you will want to stay, plus they are getting your money at the pool bar and Red Eyes so its a probably not a loss leader for them.

It's too bad that you feel a marina is responsible for a jerk that can't properly anchor or have control over his boat. I've seen some pretty stupid stuff being done it that creek by others and I an pretty sure they weren't slip holders at the marina. I don't like some of the boaters at my marina either but I don't hold the marina responsible for them being _holes.......But then again, I guess some of us were just born boat captains and didn't have to learn a thing or two through experience and by making mistakes. Unfortunately, I am still learning something new every time I go out, even new ideas with anchoring.....and by my mistakes.
 
I get your point, Brad, but in this case, the guy made two other boats have to move out of his way. Then runs back home before the sun sets. He's probably too scared to go in and out of that channel too, thus his anchor dragging is what he considers boating (if you saw the black soot that comes out when he starts his engines, you'd know where I got that idea from).

But you're right, that shouldn't taint an entire marina. That was just a vent I had to release. However, I do my best to avoid places that are prejudice, one way or another, toward "smaller" boats.

(and God forbid I mention "catamaran" on the radio...that sends every marina into a panic thinking I've got a 25' beam! :-)

I understand Bay Creek Marina in Cape Charles was doing something similar for August. For them it was stay 5 days straight and get the rest of the month for free.

All of us in the marina business are feeling the pinch. We were hoping with the fuel prices being down from last season that more people would be showing up but that has not been the case. We're busy now trying to save what is left of this year and cross our fingers for next.
 
I saw that Wes, but Bay Creek isn't discriminating. That offer is open to everybody. Although the wording I saw looked like it was "stay 5, get 25 for free" and wasn't limited to the same month. That's a pretty place they have there, but not a great location and not much to do for non-golfers.

We've got twin Honda 50's on this one. I've got a friend who put E-tech 2-stroke 90's on his. Granted, he's got a 19-knot cruise and top end of the mid 20's, but he really sucks down the gas compared to my Hondas.
