Folks-

We have received some inquiries from BoatUS members in New York about an increasing frequency of law enforcement/USCG stops on the Hudson River. These members have indicated that the reason given by boarding officers for the stops are for vessel checks/homeland security activities. Our members are concerned that these efforts may have intensified and that the frequency of such stops has potentially become unreasonable. Some have indicated being stopped multiple times by same or different law enforcement agency within the span of several days, and sometimes on the same day.

I'd like your help in researching this issue. Please let me know if you have been stopped recently, and the result of that stop (was their a warning or citation issued for unsafe operation, or failure to have proper safety equipment, for example?)

It's a new world after 9/11 and the small boat threat is real. BoatUS does greatly appreciate the efforts of the USCG and local law enforcement. They have helped to reduce boating fatalities and accidents, and ensure everyone comes home after a day on the water. That is definitely a good thing.

Thanks for any information you may be able to provide.

Scott you need to post your e-mail address as scott at xyz dot com. Most members on the forum will know how to use that to send you the info that you need. Thanks for your interest in working with the Hudson River boaters.

In case it takes him a while to venture back to the site, his e-mail is "scroft at boatus dot com"

The editor of "Boating on the Hudson" has been waging an editorial campaign against excessive law enforcement interference with recreational boaters. Until this year I've never been stopped while underway, and I've been boating for decades. It is very annoying to be stopped for showing your papers when the usual moronic boating activity continues unabated.

Safe and Happy Boating!

Just about every year we were stopped in NY Harbor.
