The toilet in my cuddy head sounds like metal rubbing metal when we flush. There is a Purasan system installed but I am not suggesting this is the cause (just wanted to give all info possible).

When we flush it actually has a friction smell.

Any ideas about the metal rubbing sound.

I pulled up the boat survey and it indicates the toilet is a Raritan 12 Volt Electric. I actually have a picture of it but cannot seem to insert it here.

Raritan makes quite a few 12v models. We will need the exact model name to help. To post a picture on this forum upload it to any of the free photo hosting services and then link to it via the instructions on the drop down "Extra Menu/FAQ" above.

What model? I doubt your problem is the PuraSan. If so and you don't have a holding tank the macerator pump could be the source of the noise maybe?

The model number is 37010-1000
Volts 12DC
AMPS: 16
Fuse size 25A
This is the first time I have been on the boat since I posted the problem. Just flushed and it sounded awful and smelled worse.

Your help is appreciated.

That's not a model number but more like a serial number showing it was made October 2000

Does it look like this?

Donna, if that's what the model is, call the Jabsco tech people. They're very helpful over the phone. Could be something relatively simple, like a worn pump/motor assembly (might be a model number label on your original pump), and replacement could be relatively easy.

There is a good chance that the problem is caused by the motor. The armature (part that rotates) is striking the field (part that is stationary). One of the primary causes of this is a rust bridge forms between these two parts and creates a grinding noise as you describe. If that's the cause you will need a new motor, or if mechanically inclined take the motor/pump assembly apart and repair if possible.
