Anyone know, off-hand, how long the trip will take and how far it is?

Southern State/Belt/Gowanas...55 minutes no traffic.
Medowbrook/Northern State/LIE...47 minutes no traffic.
Jones inlet/JI/Westbound run at 0600 with mug of hot coffee...Priceless.

Since you have a smaller boat, you may want to do the inside and go out the Rockaway inlet.

Not knowing what speed you travel at, it impossible to advise you as to how long the trip will take.
 
If you go inside through Reynolds Channel, you can exit East Rockaway Inlet also known as Debs inlet. It is a fairly straight forward inlet compared to Jones and alot less troublesome most days(although they haven't dredged that one yet either). From there, it usually takes me about an hour to the Verrazano Br. travelling at 17-18 kts and making a fairly wide arc out toward the shipping lane. It's about 16 - 18nm from inlet to bridge depending on your path.

Your path will be determined by sea conditions. Breakers form on the shoals outside of Rockaway inlet (which you pass not go through) and off Sandy Hook when sea conditions are right.

Pick a nice day an it is an hour or less from ERock. Pick a snotty one and you will white knuckle it. I don't normally use Jones but your inside trip from Jones to ER will be determined in part by how tall you are. There is one fixed bridge to go around and a RR bridge to open if necessary.

Watch out for alot of floating debri. As Mark said, pick a nice day (sea conditions).

Coming back from a trip up the Hudson in 2004 we hit some nasty conditions once we got to Ambrose channel, 6 to 8 footers 1 second apart (Dave- Current Sea will say they were 12 to 25 footers) not fun.

No I agree with 6 to 8 footers. But your boat was 25 feet in the air when it hit one!
 
The large ships in the Ambrose channel are moving faster than you may estimate. I would advice not trying to pass in front of one. Also, pay careful attention to tugs who may be towing barges. The barges will be quite a distance behind the tug, and the cable will usially be partially submerged. If you accidentially run over that cable you will likely sink your boat. I believe a tug with something in tow will have either 2 or 3 white lights on the mast, depending on the type of tow.

Also, once leaving East Rockaway, be careful not to cut the turn into the ambrose channel to close. There are breakers in close.

A couple of other things worth mentioning. Once in NY harbor keep very alert, there's a lot of ferry traffic cutting across, tugs, other boats, etc. And the wakes they all throw are more than you're used to in the bay. Also there are security zones around the Statue of Liberty, cruise ship terminal if anything is in, and probably others not coming to mind right now. Get too close and you'll quickly be visited by the Coast Guard.

Just a heads up but it might be better to just run from Jones on the outside the whole time. This way you can assess the sea conditions, if it's not right at JI you will want to cut your losses. Driving 40 minutes through Reynolds, the majority speed zone, and then hit ER Inlet and find rough seas is a waste.

Or, you could hail someone on channel 68 and ask them the sea conditions at JI, RI, and Ambrose channel.
