fuel are you kidding me

That's not what I heard:)
Besides I just remembered you don't have diesels you wont get far.

It was the same boat and it sure looked like John.

How many of those boats are around.

I think I used about 20 gallons of diesel in my sailboat last year. That was a hard nut to swallow.

Dave, you boat must be very economical.

Compared to a sail boat it is. On average the most I have ever burned is 21 gph and I was pushing it a bit. Again this is average not instant.

Dave, that sounds like idle speed numbers. I can't believe that's all you burn at cruise.

Maybe Dave forgot he has two engines? LOL

Cat 3126's 420hp burn
8.1 at 2000rpm
10.4 at 2200rpm
13.4 at 2400rpm
17.4 at 2600rpm
23.2 at 2800rpm

I guess he travels everywhere at idle speed.

My Cats burn 21-22 gph each at cruise, 26 knots.

I don't think Dave has 420's.

Again what you are missing is average burn for multi hour trip this includes from the time I start the motors to the time I turn them off. I don't have meters to calc the real time burn. But I can show you my log and others have viewed it and come up with the same data as I. Based on hour meter to gallon added when fill I fill up it simple math hard to screw up. Then I add in the miles traveled and here is where is get interesting I get just over .9 MPG. I don't cruise as fast as either of you but I do burn less and I'm OK with this. I would like to see you numbers figured in the same way I sure you would be close to the same. On my last boat I had a Flow meter and I found it depressing to say the least it was very accurate I was underpowered and only getting .75 - 1.15 MPG on my 30' with twin 4.3 mercs. I don't really care what my max burn is only average on a long trip and I taken several and it's always been the same. In fact my last trip I went with Victoria Secret a fairly new Silverton 38' Sport Bridge I cruised a little faster and burned less fuel. If there is something wrong with my boat I don't want to fix it!

Dave (Current Sea) and now this Dave, must have attended the same math class :)

Dave,
I do get it, as you mentioned your numbers are an "average" of what you burn in a season, not what you burn at cruise.

I have always said, those numbers (average)are useless when comparing fuel burn to other boats for obvious reasons. IMHO, to compare fuel burn you need a fuel flow monitor.

I think this season I am going to calculate my fuel burn this way just to see what the number comes out to be.

PS
When you buy a car and it says fuel mileage will be between 15 and 25 mpg, who are those guys that get 25mpg :)

Why does this seem odd to you. Using your numbers it's not that far off. I cruise at about 23-2400 rpms this puts me at between 20.8 - 27.8 while cruising, average in the time it takes to warm the motors get out to a channel and the occasional no wake zones then return to dock cool down and kill the motors. I didn't even want to post this but I will I've had numbers as low as 16.9 per hour when it was mostly short rides.
At 2400rpms I'm comfortably going 20knts I usually set my GPS for MPH which is usually 25-26 as high as 28 with tides and wind in my favor. These numbers are averaged on long trips not for the season although the average would only go down slightly. I have traveled from home port to say Port Jeff the to Montaulk and filled up there. This was hard running hours in crappy conditions and pushing it and still averaged 20gph. Now using the GPS to give me distance travel I calculate the MPG and get .9 something. This isn't rocket science and I know how to use a calculator. I agree that at cruise I'm probably burning about 27-28 but even that's not bad compared to some of the numbers you guys are doing. I'm OK with being a little bit slower I not in that big a rush when I'm on vacation.

BTW I do open up the motors a few times as recommended during each trip and that is factored in still 20 gph. I have others with the same motors report the same.

Dave, here's the fallacy in your numbers: I could sit and idle at the dock for 10 hours, then go out and buzz up to Newburgh and back. So I put 12 hours on the engines, but I only burned 72 gallons. Do you want to believe that I only burn 6 gallons per hour? If so, I've got a bridge to sell you.

The numbers posted by Starry Night are what you burn at the RPM's. There is no way around them.

Fill up, run the boat at cruising speed, fill up again, then tell us what your GPH is. You are only fooling yourself.

Bob those are good numbers (fuel burn) what is WOT and the fuel burn and speed? Just curious, no hidden agenda.

I was very impressed with the 42 Silverton fuel burn, not math, but measured, 27 gal per hour at 25 knots

Mike You are not listening that's what I did I drove to Haverstraw filled up and drove to montauk with a quick stop in Port Jeff that's several hours of cruise. I don't linger at port and even if I did once or twice these are the same numbers again and again they have been lower but not higher I think the highest was 20.9. Did you happen to read the numbers that he posted they are very close to what I have been saying. I have nothing to gain here I'm just stating facts and math. I know I was wrong about my draft too. I guess I don't know anything about my boat everyone else seems to know more.

On our recent trip we ran a combination of no wake, minimal wake and cruise. When we were at cruise we did 2350rpms. Speed varied 20-22knots depending on wind and tide. About half was done at this speed. We burned somewhere between 230 and 240 gallons and went about 340 miles. We did right around 17 or 18 hours total. I packed up my log book as soon as we got to Cali or I would give you the exacts but even the Captain we hired could not believe we used so little fuel. Don't know if this makes a difference but I do have a glendining engine sync.
