Fuel Avail/General Cond's Hudson to Lk Champ??

Hey Folks,

Looking for local intel on the condition of upper Hudson and Champlain Canal north to the lake. I am planning my dream cruise for this season in end of July and 1st two weeks of August to make my way from RI all the way up to the lake with wife and kids. With any luck all the way to Canada border before we turn around. Have been talking about it for years but this yr is it.

I have all the waterway guides and charts. I know the canals are open and operating. But I've read a few blog posts from Loop cruisers suggesting that Diesel fuel was scarce and expensive north of Kingston, NY. This due to damage from Irene.

Would love any local intel on conditons and places to avoid that may have been good destinations in the past? Thx!

You'll be fine getting diesel up thru Albany. Shady Harbor Marina has it, and is about 30 miles south of Albany.
The Albany Yacht Club also has it, and they're only 8 or so miles from lock 1.
Either marina is nice, and would make a fine stop, if it worked out that way. Shady's bigger and has a pool, and restaurant.
Once into the canal you could check out champlain harbor marina, seems to be a popular stop.

Excellent, thanks for the tips. I will be sure to check those spots out! Hope to top off in the Albany/Troy area before making the run to the lake.
 
Prospective... I wrote a column in the "Boating on the Hudson" magazine last month that lists marinas from Troy north through Schuylerville. Diesel is indeed scarce, but Schuyler Yacht Basin in Schuylerville has it. I am President of the local chamber of commerce for Southern Saratoga County. Prospective, be sure to post reports, especially the transit through ny city. We also hail from ri, and would like to know how conditions were, speed travelled and fuel used. We have a 36' trawler, with twin dd engines, so our speed would only be 8-10 kts, but please post lots of pics and how hard/easy the locks were (were both in our 60's). Eric

Thanks, I was hoping you might respond. I am taking your number just in case! I'll look for the article as well. If I can get fuel in Troy then I should be good until the lake. Good to know Schuylerville is also an option.

Erice.. I'll be sure to post lots of details. This is a trip I've been looking into for a long time. Now is the time!
 
As far as stops, Haverstraw Marina is nice, as is Kingston. In Kingston, you can stay at the town docks, or Rondout Yacht Basin, which has a pool, picnic grounds, and a snack shop.

Catskill got hit pretty hard by Irene, not sure what is open there now.

If you can, time your transit through NY Harbor not during rush hour. The ferry traffic gets very heavy until about 10AM, with wakes making the ride very bumpy. Look for the SST and the space shuttle on display at the Intrepid Museum.

I'm thinking of Rondout on way up and Haverstraw on way back. Coming thru NYC to stay at liberty landing this Sunday. Not quite sure what it will be for way home but will certainly try to avoid rush hour.

Passed through the area over the weekend. Your best bet if you need to duck in to Catskill Creek is Riverview, the first marina to starboard as you enter the creek. He's got fuel and transient dockage if you end up needing it. Further down the creek, Hop-O-Nose can offer you dockage either at the marina itself or across at what was Catskill Marina but I would not consider it a great option. He now owns the docks in front of the townhouses, although not all the fingers are out. He made an arrangement with the owner of Catskill Marina to run that space as well but there is very limited dockage, no fuel, the restrooms and pool have a ways to go and the main building has been torn down. Very sad. Further up-river in New Baltimore, Shady Harbor is now a great destination marina. They also have fuel and it's easy-in, easy-out. It's also a great dock & dine option for lunch or dinner.
