gas tank leak? 1984 seville 19'

hi,
i am pretty sure i have a gas tank leak. i have the boat stored in my driveway. occasionally smelled gas along side of boat a few weeks ago. at that time i checked the engine compartment, check the drain plug on the transom, only water dripping out.(plug had been removed). last night taking the garbage out the smell was stronger, i checked the drain plug again and gas was dripping out in a small stream. i placed a gas container underneath the drain plug. i am pretty convinced that the botton of the gas tank must be leaking and flowing towards the transom since i have the bow slightly raised.

the stream got lighter, by this morning there was a ocassional dripping but seemed to be water not gas.

i am trying to find out if the gas tank back then was made from alumininum or steel and also aprox gallons of gas it would hold (i think it takes somewhere between 24-35 gallons). also any recommendations on who i could contact to have tank removed and/or tested.

(so much for the new ashphalt driveway i had put in 2 years ago)

any help or suggestions is appreciated.

Was the gas tank put away completely full? On a warm day (such as yesterday) the gas will expand and come out the vent. Hopefully this is your issue (non-problem). This happened to me a few years ago. Is the tank full?
 
The tank is probably aluminum, you can contact Sea Ray to find out. You have to be very careful with a situation like this, since fumes can build up in the enclosed bilge. If the vent is leaking, you'd smell it strongest there, if you smell it at the bilge drain, a leak is likely, but it could be the tank, lines, fuel filter on the engine, etc. DO NOT turn on anything electrical in the engine compartment when checking around and I'd leave the cover off for a while before doing that. Many older boats have a plywood cover over the gas tank that can be removed.

yes, i did top of tank before storing and i removed batteries as well...

unfortunately it was leaking out of the bilge drain hole in the transom. i contacted ebay and they said that it is an aluminum tank holding about 28 gallons.

i guess i will try to contact some marine gas tank installers that can test the gas tank for leaks.
let me know if you can recommend some. i found one in farmingdale and one in i think i was oyster bay.

this weekend i may take a closer look at the fuel lines, etc.
