Has anybody heard anything about not using graphite containing shaft packing (GFO) with stainless steel shafts because of a risk of galvanic corrosion?

I used GFO shaft packing on my SS shafts for over 15 years w/o any issues.

I've been using it that long too Bob, without issues. Someone in another forum posted about this. I had never heard it.

I wonder if the concern may be for the Western Pacific Trading Co.'s semi-knock-off GTU packing rather than the most-popular true Gore GFO product (with Teflon?). Not the same .
( But I use shaft seals.)

Changed to GFO long ago - never a problem

I used gore packing for 17 years with no problems, don’t know if it has graphite.

Graphite is a good conductor so connecting bronze stuff box and as shaft with graphite does raise questions. Interesting.

GFO is widely used. Non issue.

What I have never seen is shafts not made of SS. What would you use, bronze? Too soft for any decent torque level

Monel.

GFO is graphite impregnated. can't find any reference to Teflon. There is something in the ABYC standards about not using graphite with stainless shafts.

They are many grades of SS stock for shafts, not sure where monel fits but I know that The strongest material is Aquamet AQ22HS

Monel is Nickel-Copper with a dash of iron. It is not Stainless Steel. It is also "a bit pricey". But it is an excellent choice for prop shafts.

I don’t think it s as strong as AQ22HS. That’s pretty much the strongest stock recommenced when I repowered.
