Hey all,
What exactly does a gimbal bearing do. After last season I noticed a non-typical noise coming from the back part of my engine (5.7L I/O with an alpha drive). When my hauler/mechanic pulled the boat at the end of the season I told him about the noise. When he pulled the drive to do general maintenance he checked my gimbal bearing and said that it would need to be replaced.
My questions are this:
1) Exactly what does a gimbal bearing do?
2) I re-installed my outdrive last season, did I do something wrong?
3) Are there any preventable measures that I could have done to make it last longer?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
