I have never been to Miami, my son and I are going down there for a training class in my industry.
We will be there from 2-5-11 to 2-9-11
2-7 to 2-9 we will be in class, so no play time those days.
The Saturday and Sunday (2-5 and 2-6) we have some play time.

Any suggestions on must see things to see or do while we are there?

We will be staying at the Hyatt Summerfield Suites

Any suggestions would be appreciated as well as some good food places.

Thanks
Walter

I hope you can speak and understand Spanish...

looks like that's by the airport... not much there, you'll have to take a cab to get to South Beach or Coconut Grove.

the Grove is closer and a little "milder" than SoBe. skip "downtown"/bayside... tourist trap.

in the grove, avoid the Chart House.. food is average, over priced and service sucks! Monty's is $$$ to eat on dirty tables with plastic utentils and drink out of plstic cups... Scottys' is the better of the 3 waterfront joints but nto that great. Many good places in the Grove.. if you like meat, "the Knife" is a south american all you can eat meat place which is worth going to.

in Miami Beach, Lincoln Road has many good places as long as you dont' mind gays starring at your butt. :)

Rent a car and drive over to beaches, down to the keys, or to everglades national park. Go over to Key Biscayne. That’s what I like to do when I go somewhere I have never been just to drive around and check out the sites.

There is much to see if you have never been there before. Try to get a couple of extra days to explore.

I second the Lincoln Road suggestion. Also, the Glow Bar in the lobby of the Fontenbleu - both great locations to people watch. The best thing about Miami is the diversity!

No visit to Miami is complete without going to SW 8th Street and having the best Cuban food on the planet.

Usted no tiene que hablar español. Eso es justo lo que el viejo hombres blancos de Nueva York pensar. :)

Pascal forgot to mention that aside from plastic and styrofoam place settings at Monty's, you're also likely to get bad service. Even so, I'm a fairly regular visitor there, particularly if I'm in the mood for fried seafood and beer with a view. I prefer the location in SoBe inside the Miami Beach Marina. It seems cleaner and has a less restricted view of the water. There's also another all-you-can-eat Brazilian steakhouse there (churrascaria).

Copied from my post in the Miami hotel thread, you might also enjoy the Mary Brickell Village area:

Notable mentions: Rosa Mexicano, "Dolores, but you can call me Lolita", Pericones and up one more block, River Oyster Bar. There's also a steakhouse that I've heard good things about.

My favorite restaurant in the entire area is in the Grove, and fortunately, JUST enough off of the beaten path (a single block) that tourists aren't likely to stumble across it. It's called Calamari. It's relatively new, but it's part of a legacy that included a restaurant a few blocks away that was famous for customers dancing on the tables after the kitchen closed for the night. When a new est went into that location, they had to post a sign that said, "please don't dance on the tables". lol (and the fun-lacking replacement restaurant failed quickly)

Other Grove places:

- Jaguar - mexican, kind of loud
- Mr . Moe's. (a log-cabin theme with covered, swinging tables/benches on the sidewalk) Honestly, it's mostly bar-food, but that doesn't matter much when you're sipping a huge beer at a swinging table on a sidewalk on Commodore Place.
- Greenstreet - classic Grove "funkiness" with surprisingly good food - not on "green st" btw
- Berries. Indoor/outdoor grill/bar. Great, food, great service, great atmosphere with good prices. Even the whiners and snobs on the restaurant review sites have to like this place, and it's very "Grove".
- The Yard House. It's a chain, and it's in a mall that's technically in Coral Gables, but the YH is in the courtyard and has outdoor seating if you want. They feature more beer on tap than I've ever seen. It's full of people and has a huge menu. The mall, Merrick Park, is between Coconut Grove and Coral Gables. There's also a sister restaurant to Calamari in the same courtyard as the Yard House, but I've lost the name...

Similar topic came up in ask the capt. by Timeout90. I am attending boat show and was interested in commits there for my plans. Always looking for another approach. Last year I stayed at airport Regency. Would take the complimentary shuttle back to the airport each day and catch Miami Metro Bus for ride to convention center. Everything operates on 1/2 hour so not much wait anywhere. Do in reverse order to return to hotel. Beside Regency [not for from where you are staying 42nd] is a good sea food joint. Beer in the bucket with outdoor dinning type place. Exactly what I like.
I enjoy the bus ride each day. It goes by some interesting places. Never rode to end but that might be nice sometime. Never felt unsafe even coming back after dark.
This method is not what I would do if wife was traveling but it works for me and I’m doing same this year. To get on the water I met Capt Kevin with Jumanji last year. He is working on getting me on a split charter one of my days.
Wish you were going to be there a little later [Feb 17] where we could share one of them things from that bucket.

Are you back? Got any photo or stories you would like to share? If not appropriate for form would you email?

Would it be ok to report on my visit here? Miami was fun...well worth the effort. Love the diversity of boating areas, boats, people and food. Both shows had lots to offer no matter where your interest . It was nice hearing the stories from a delivery captin who brought a Westport 5000 miles. How do they get them so clean and polished? I almost walked into glass but something said put your hand out and sure enough there was a electric slider there.

I’m not a fisherman but I got to say; my highlight was catching a Sail....wrote a review for the captain below. He later told me he sometimes works with people 3 days to make something happen and I not caring get the experience in 2 hrs.
Me seating at flybridge
