OK, I am feeling better, but can't go outside do to respiratory complications. So I play on the computer. BTW, care to guess what Mag Hdg you would take from the GG to get there?

They had a special on the History Channel or Discovery, whoever ... about the road they built to Prudhoe Bay Oil Reserves in 1974 or so. Since this was well before I was born (pause for the laughter to die down) I was curious as to why they did not use ships in the week of summer.

So I decided to use The Capn software to plot a course from the GG. About 3400 nm. The depth in feet at Prudhoe Bay is shown to be 2-5 feet.

Tidal surge? Nope. I looked it up and there appears to be almost NO tides.

This post is surely the high point (or low) of boredom on a pretty day. They had to build roads because the water is too shallow. That said, they have a road that hops islands to a deep water (15 ft) port of sorts. Feel free to correct me if I looked at it wrong.

As Paul Harvey used to say, "Now you know the rest of the story of why they built the Kamikaze Trail."

Actually, I think the high (or low) point of boredom is me reading BoaterEd at about 2:00 am 'cause I can't sleep. I glad this new post was here to read, and I'm glad you're feeling better. (And that 7 inch tidal range looks tough. Not sure how I'd handle that....)

As long as we're bored, look at the satellite images of the alluvial plain around Prudhoe Bay. Anyone know why so many of the lakes and ponds are so squared off?

Dug out by man? Cooling water ponds for a refinery?

Here is an even deeper (?) question.

While attending a military symposium in 1977, we were shown classified photos of the Soviet Union.
The officer doing the briefing showed us satellite photos and then pointed out the shadows of a barbed wire fence. This photo was on a screen the size of an indoor movie theater. We were told you could read the newspaper over the shoulders of people. He further stated the satellite coverage was always better around an important target. Hmmmm, ok.

Fast forward 30 years to Google Earth. My house has good, sharp photos down to around 600 feet "high" on Google earth. In fact, the photo was taken in June 2007, on a Tuesday around 11am.
I can tell that because I parked my green Chevy truck in the back yard the 6 weeks we were gone to the hospital in Denver, CO. AND the trash cans were still in front of my neighbors house, while our daughter had moved ours back to the gate into the back yard. Trash is picked up here on Tuesday morning. The shadows from the house indicate it is around 11am.

What is so important about Sacramento? Pick an active duty AFB, or Army Post. The White House?
WHY is the -- sorry, can't think of the word, the picture so clear on some places and poor on others. Prudhoe Bay, Alaska has "ok" photos, but the quality is not as good as the shots of my house. WHY?

BTW, I never type in MY address for all these things. Including Yahoo maps. I am paranoid enough that I type in the Sunrise Mall. I live a mile and a quarter east of it, easy to find my street from 10,000 feet. I did it all the time when I flew out of Mather AFB. Map reading 101.

I am joking about some of this stuff, but I do wonder why the photo is so clear at my house, yet other, seemingly more important things are fuzzier. My neighbor is the CEO of a large Environmental Group. I am certainly not that important. WHAT is the criteria for these photos? OK BTG, are you asleep yet?

I'm not asleep--I'm on the road working on family stuff. I think the satellite images are sold somewhat like charts--various regions, various granularities, etc., so what you get depends on what your portal has purchased. I've noticed a great deal of difference in the various providers, with msn.com often having the sharpest photos. (I think they incorporate aerial photos with the satellite photos as you zoom in.)

Just like grocery stores, you gotta shop around....

You are probably right. I did not know msn.com had photos. Google is about it since the Terra earth thing a few years ago.

I was only partly kidding about their criteria. It does seem strange at times. The photos of the California coast are great.

I thought about paying for better photos, then decided for plan B. Free.

I find myself up more than I like due to medical stuff.
