Gonna Freeze for a few nights...anyone worried?

My boat is a 16' with 90hp Mercury outboard, parked at my friend's house, and right next to it in the driveway is his 18' Cobalt with a Chevy 307 and... I want to say Jacuzzi 12YJ jet pump? I'm starting to admit to myself I need to pay more attention to those "winterizing" tips. Both boats are parked in the driveway, you think they'll be alright?

If the OB has had all the water drained out of the lower drive, it will be ok. The 307 is in jeopardy, but the Berkeley jet pump is ok if all the water is out of it.

It never hurts to "over protect" though!

Who are you guys buying your Air Docks from? If it is Pacific Boat Center, the Rinker dealer at the Bethel Island Bridge, I better start getting a commission from Matt!!!!

Flutterby,
Got one for my Tolly? 32k...I thought about it, the cost vs haul outs, but you need a different bottom paint as I recall.

I'm quite sure all the water is out of the outboard, and the 307 has a spun bearing and is on its way to being replaced shortly, so I don't think we're real concerned about it.

I don't sell them; I'm just a happy customer. Check this website out for sizes/weight and cost.

http://www.airdock.com/frame_1.htm

It has been 10 years since I had the bottom painted. One of the many advantages. My ROI was 3 1/2 yrs, but your mileage may differ......

Thanks for the link, but they don't have any my size. Gonna be even colder tonight they
are saying...oh well.

I covered the pool equipment last night and might even put a light bulb under the tarp tonight. Brrrrrrrr. I considered running it all night..our pool was covered in ice this
morning. As far as I can remember, that is only the 2nd time since 1986 that our pool has had ice on it.

I just got back from the local Sacramento marine store over on Micron. Needed a few odds and ends for another project. They had the 24" (25 watt) GoldenRods on the shelf and priced about right. Each 24" GoldenRod will dehumidify up to 300 square feet. That's about right from what I've found using them during last several years. You can use multiple units for larger areas.

DLL Check that website every once in a while or call them. They keep adding sizes/weights to the available product line. They might get up to your size.......Maybe they do special orders?????

Good idea........

But it would sure be big to lift it, I wonder if my slip is wide enough?

The bladders don't take up much beam space----maybe 4-6 inches total. But you do need several feet of vertical clearance. The 27 footer next to me has a radar arch with the anchor light and antennae attached to that. The anchor light has to be rotated to horizontal. The rubber ducky antenna is ok.

The vertical clearance could be a problem. We probably have 3 or 4 feet, I never paid any
attention to the height once we cleared the edge coming in.

With the boat out of the water, you would not need the haul outs would you? Even a survey
might be done there...up in the air.

I also wonder what the insurance would cost?$$$$$

I just changed my insurance from part of my homeowners policy to Boat US. It never came up, though it should get a discount!!!! I used to haul my boat [it has a trailer] out 3 times a year to clean my hull, transom and outdrive. It was sooo much work and I dreaded it! Now I only haul it when it needs to go to the boatyard. I even change my prop from the dingy with the air dock raising the stern....

Boat insurance is a strange thing. If you park your car in your garage, or yard and don't use it, you get a discount from many companies.

I asked Zurich about the same thing with my boat. They said no.

I am not sure who has the best insurance rates or who handles claims the best, but Zurich was my carrier up in Sacramento, when the night someone broke into a bunch of boats in the Sacramento Marina. Zurich paid the claim, so I try to stay with a company when they take a loss from me...sort of let them get some of their money back. Knock on wood, but no thefts since I have been in WB.

Flutterby, since you put your boat on a lift, any change in your insurance? Did you insure the lift itself?

I did change insurance this last year, but that was because as part of my home owners policy, they would not list my marina as "an interested party". So I went to Boat US. No discount for the lift. No, I do not have the lift insured [as far as I know]. It has a 5 yr guarantee which just expired. I would consider that as a self-insured item.

Dave,

I think that is because statistically speeking, most boat losses occur while tied up at the dock. You figure if you're going to have a break in, it will be at the dock. They also say that the vast majority of sinking occur while docked either from dockside water being left on and an internal fitting fails or a thru-hull hose bursts or in the case of an outdrive, the bellows fail.

We should get a discount if we promise to use our boat more!

I wonder if the lift is covered under any portion of the Boat US policy...like the contents of your dockbox or something?

Dave, you have a good point, the vast majority of boats do sink in the slip. I had all plastic type thru-hulls replaced with brass in 2003, so I am hoping they don't break. I have started replacing the internal water lines that look like they are getting old, and I
have 2 of the brass cutoff valves between the faucet and my boat. But I still have to turn the brass fittings...duh!!

The engines look pretty good with the new paint on them. I need to get a couple more cans
from the cat dealer...to finish up.

Next project is to fix the darned gages telling us how much fresh water we have. I might be better off to just run new wires and install a new gage.

Did young Mr. Daniel compete in the frozen bun run? If you told us, I missed it. Our Portuguese Water Dog got on the top step of the pool before it froze, but she got out pretty quick. After the pool froze she just stares at it.

Dave,

He did do it and the water was 46 degrees; it didn't sound that cold, but when you put your hand in, it felt like an ice chest. He got a write up in several papers and is quite happy to be famous Here are a few of the articles:

And here is a pic of him doing the deed:
