So I was checking this app on iPad called tideapp. When you bring up shinnecock canal it tells you when it is slack and when it is flowing. Seems it would be handy to figure when it is best time to hit canal when locks are open.

I think ur insane for doing the locks when there open ! Way too many idiots to worry about

Rob

When I say open, I mean slack open, so you just go right through with no current.
Yeah, if its crowded and lots of idiots going both ways, then I see your point.
But certainly makes it easier than going through when it's ripping or having to deal with fenders.

I am no 20 year + boating veteran, but I have been doing the locks since 2003 including last month, I guess 9 seasons now. I have gone through a few of times closed and locked though, but mostly have done it while open. If you have the advantage of timing the locks for about 45minutes before they close or 45minutes after they open you have basically slack tide and you just go through like butter. I know this is not always possible in a travel schedule, but I have managed to do this just like timing high tide in the Moriches. I stay at WHB and know it takes about an hour to the locks and then I call ahead a day or two so I can plan the open / close. I do the same leaving Montauk, Greenport and other eastern areas coming back.

I have found more idiots trying to lock though. I have had boats cut dangerously in front of me just get in, large boats come so close behind me with their anchor up over my cockpit almost bashing my head, boaters tying up to the cleat instead of just a wrap around. I could go on. But I also agree that running the locks open and rushing can be a very dangerous situation for you and other boaters especially coming south through the tidal gates.

Just IMHO.

Does this app account for day light savings time? I have the Droid version and you need to add an hour and it always throws me off as a result.

Also if you want basic charts, check our Marina Life app.
I use it not for navigation, but to see what the paper chart looks like.

So comparing saltwatertides.com with tideapp.

on 8/28 when I am going thru moriches, Coast Guard Station is

High at 7:24AM on Saltwater and
High at 7:23AM in tideapp

So either they are both wrong or both right!

I am thinking I want to hit Moriches around 7:30AM to be safe!

Ive seen way to many things go south. Boats crashing into the sides of the locks, Boats getting spun around by the whirl pools Or best yet when someone just stops just as they enter the gate. WHERE DO I GO THEN ??? So yes i rather lock tru. Everyone has there place. Timing for total slack ? That requires timing and patience. I have neither. Theres a restaurant right at the perfect spot at the locks . Go eat there , then tell me what you learned.

Totally agree, when its flowing, going through is tough.
Did it once against the flow and didn't like it.
Anyway, point of post was to highlight that app, which when you look at the lock for railroad bridge it gives the ebb info which should help you determine if locks are closed, open and slack or open and flowing.
Good info if transiting the lock.

No problem Rob.
Hopefully I won't be bouncing off the sides.
I wonder if tiderunners business increases when its flowing too hard?
Guess they should call that place tidechickens!

I locked through for the first time this year, and seeing those videos in advance helped. It was nice to know exactly what I'd be seeing, to have my crew prepared for what they'd do with the lines, right fenders out, etc.
