Tempo ends overseas production
Marine accessories maker Tempo Products has severed its longtime relationship with its importers in Taiwan, and will produce most of its products in its Ohio factory.
The change defies the trend of increasing reliance on overseas manufacturers. The new business model will provide Tempo more flexibility in meeting customer needs, says Kerry Klein, Tempo's president.
“I think it's really maintaining good quality and serving our customers," Klein said, in a phone interview. “As you can imagine, it's very difficult to set and impose quality control standards from 10,000 miles overseas."
Klein says 95 percent of Tempo's products will be made in the United States, and the majority will be manufactured in Tempo's plant in Solon, Ohio. The move to domestic manufacturing will allow the company to better control quality and inventory turnaround, and offset the rising cost of shipping, Klein says.
Tempo manufactures fuel tanks and accessories for the marine aftermarket and OEM distributors.
