Greenport to Montauk

Plotting my course for upcoming trip.
I have gone both North and South of Gardiner's island. South is certainly more scenic but north is alot more open water.

What do you think is better?
 
Hi Rob

I usually take the North route because I believe (according to my route comparison) it was a bit shorter and as you said it is more open. But if the winds are out of the south you may want to stay south for a more protected ride.

I prefer north. Napeague Bay always seems longer. Last few times were were in Montauk, you could see the place changing with people from the city putting up mansions. I have a dock mate who says that Montauk will be the new Brooklyn in a few years.

Yeah, just finished plotting it both ways and North is 1.75 NM shorter.
So makes more sense.

North route is a lot simpler, all open water. I looked at the south route on the charts once when going from Montauk to 3 mile harbor and it seemed like it might be tricky.
 
North route . A lot faster easier . Not even a conversation

Ull have a great time

Going south is heading west to go east again . Then south by sag only to go north again .

Spend enough time to enjoy shelter

When are you going ? I'm heading to Kingston for the 4th I'll be back the following Saturday . Then off to greenport and riverhead . Then Essex .

The western route is much trickier, especially around Three mile Harbor. Just make sure you stay north of the ruins at between Orient Point and Gardiners Island, before you turn south to Montauk.

Rob, No where near Sag, this is going east of shelter on a pretty decent angle southeast. Issue is Gardiner's island has another island called Cartwright that sticks down and you have to go way south to get around it, then back Northeast.

We have done it before and it is a very scenic trip and not difficult but after plotting both other way does save some time and fuel but not enough to avoid the scenery, so I will leave it up to the other 6 boats and see. I don't mind going either way.

If you have never done it, I recommend it. But when I did it we were heading from Shinnecock canal to Montauk, so did not pay to go around North Side of Shelter.

As for dates there, we are:

Greenport 7/2-7/4
Montauk 7/4 - 7/7
Block 7/7 - 7/9

I have to look at a chart ... I never go north of Gardners ... ( I lied ... there is a cove on the north east side ) ... Shhh

I thought u were talking about going around shelter , my apologies ...

No issues. It's all nice cruising but definately gets tricky by Sag and there are some rocks there!

You should swing by AYC, we have some large empty slips on C dock right across from us. Big BBQ this Sunday for Father's day!
 
I have no plans ... Kids screwed my weekend .. I may crash the party
 
Will run into tide issues if I bring the boat. If all goes according to plan will be returning from Freeport with the boat in the afternoon then will drive over. How late do you think you guys will be there?
