Thanks for all of your input thus far. My brother reports all boat systems are good to go – he’s spent the last several weekends preparing the boat and getting used to the on board systems.
We have discussed the planned route at length: depart Long Beach and head for Santa Barbara for fuel and the weather window around Point Conception. Once we depart there, we’ll head northerly to Santa Cruz for our next refueling. We’ll take an additional 10gal of diesel and will be prepared for intermediate stops if required. From Santa Cruz, we’ll proceed to his Marina which is on the east side of SF Bay, near Berkley (I don’t have the name handy).
We discussed the usually safety devices and he has it all covered. Electronic Nav aids are all working and we’ll have the handheld compasses, bino’s, VHF, GPS, ect…
I’m still evaluating clothing requirements as I will be coming from upstate NY in Nov. We spoke again tonight about the type of clothing and he reports that he has full canvass and a dodger; we can expect to experience sea spray, 10-15kt wind and cool (58F) temps. I am researching the best “one event” use of foul weather gear by looking at LLBean, West Marine, Dicks Sporting Goods…. and my Military issue Gore-Tex. I’m still evaluating. Any opinions and recommendations are welcome.
Jim
