Yesterday, we had to drop our kids off on the other side of the river to visit with their Grandmother. We called ahead to Half Moon Bay in Croton, same as we have for the last five years. In the past I was always shook down for a $10.00 which was fine. On our side of the river we would offer that as a tip for the courtesy anyway. (Courtesy for you members at Half Moon who probably don't understand this word, is defined as the showing of politeness in one's attitude and behavior toward others) However yesterday I was hit up for $25.00 to pull up on the main dock for 4 minutes and drop off my kids. We did not even throw a line. The dock boy Steven was very apologetic for having to hit me over the head, and blamed his membership for the warm welcome. I guess I am not used to this kind of behavior. Our marina (PBM) may not be built around a fancy pool, or condos. It is however built around Courtesy.

Several years ago, we experienced the same shake-down. We went to drop off a couple of people and the dock boy told us that we had to pay him $20.

I have been to marinas all over the east coast, from the Chesapeake Bay to Martha's Vineyard and NO ONE (save HMB) has ever demanded money to drop someone off or pick someone up.

I guess the same behavior is continuing, what a shame that the owners allow this type of boater unfriendly action to occur. I wonder how much the "members" of the marina received from the fee...

That is good to know in case I need to drop someone off there. Before I paid him however I would ask for a receipt, or use a credit card. This way you know if it is just a really good tip for the dockhands or a legit charge.

Remember Warren, they were voted one of the best resort destinations in the north east by some boating magazine. (Hogan can fill you in on the sordid details around that scam.)

I think we should have dinghy races in and out of that marina some Saturday afternoon. Or perhaps a 10-20 dinghy parade to clog things up over there.

Maybe I'm just being too easy but the only justification I can think of as to why they would do this is their proximity to Croton. I would imagine that could be a popular pick up and drop off for a lot of people wanting to join their frieds for the day on thier boat. I would imagine that could get annoying.

I would think that if that were the case, there would be a sign - this sounds like the dock boy has figured out a way to supplement his income.

They have a drop off charge at North Cove in NYC also. I remember checking their rates once and being surprised to see that.

"Small Vessel Touch & Go Rate - $1 per foot (15 minutes or less on a space available basis, 50 ft or less, no reservations), $2 per foot for pick up and drop off."

That's the difference between you and me. You are too cynical. I on the other hand believe in the good in all people. (and one eyed dogs too)

I wonder if it can swim. Are there sharks in the sound?

Getting back on topic has anyone ever heard of this drop off fee anyplace else? I could understand in NYC but not Croton.

Chelsea wants $40 for a drop off/pick up, but like you said that's the city.

Montauk Yacht Club charges as does Danfords.

But if you come in for fuel and some people get off the boat................

Just make sure they don't have a lot of luggage.

I have never done this but I would never have thought this would be the case.

I thought marinas were supposed to welcome boaters and allow for such things.

Sunday I went to greet a fellow boater traveling through our area just to make him feel welcome. While rafted and talking with the captain he told me how a few years ago he stopped in Tarrytown looking for a place to buy provisions, not knowing were to stop he figured he would ask the fuel dock for advice when he pulled up to the fuel dock there was no one there so he tied off to the dock and went to seek help and advice he had trouble finding any sign of life, finally he found someone in the back of the restaurant and he starts to ask and he says his boats at the fuel dock and he looking for advice the guy says I be right there to to help fuel the boat so he explains he's only looks for a place to tie up and buy provision the guy responds "if you don't need fuel then get the f--- off the dock" and continues to berate him about how if he wants charity then he should go to the city and look for handouts. Needless to say he push on.

I was blown away when I heard this but I guess this is more common then I thought, Sad.

So Fishtale, If shaking you down for $25.00 will keep you away Im going to start charging you everytime we tie up your boat!!!!! ;>)

OMG..that is some really funny stuff right there Butch!!!!!

And Judy my Dear, where in the , welll you know what I was going to say have you been. How about making an appearance at the marina.
