We are getting ready to plan our Chesapeake Cruise for this summer. It will be seven nights and about ten boats.

In the past we have done:
Kent Narrows
Great Oak
St Micheals
Herrington Harbor South
Annapolis
Sailing emporium

This year we are going to try to get into Baltimore and we are do Herrington Harbor again, but looking for other suggestions.

We like having a pool to hang out at, and or a town we can walk to.

We are coming from the C&D so Herrington Harbor is about as far south as we would go.

I know it's a little further south than you want to go, but Solomons is pretty nice.

Rock Hall is a nice stop. Kinda of in between Great Oaks and the Narrows and straight over from Baltimore. Hit Baltimore on the way down and Rock Hall on the way back or vicey versey. Marinas on both sides of town with pools and things to see. Tim

I have to second the Solomons recommendation (many pools and a great town to walk to). Try and be more like -gasp- sailors. Have a bunch of places you'd like to go and see what the weather will allow. If you can get to Solomons, you won't regret it. From the Bay Bridge, it's between 2-3 hours for planing power boats.

Tim, Thanks for reminding me of Rock Hall, we had a great time there last time. Sailing Emporium is in Rock Hall, only had a brain fart yesterday and could not think of the name. That will probably be on the list, I would love to go to Solomons, but to many people think it is to far with the cost of fuel.

Mixman, the problem with being more like sailors, is getting slips for 10 boats at the last minute. Come to think of it, some places it is hard to get reservations for 10 boats even trying this early! One of these years I am going to shoot for 2+ weeks on the cruise and go where the mood takes me.

Keep the ideas coming.

One of our favorite places is the Hyatt in Cambridge. Awesome facility with 2 huge pools and full access to the resort. Golf, great restaurant next to the marina and only a short shuttle ride to town. It is only accross the bay from Herrington Harbor south. Also Knapps Narrows in Tilghman Island. Which is on the way to Cambridge. Also in that area is Oxford. up the Tred Avon River. Each are great destinations and very close to each other.

Personally I dont think Solomons is that exciting. good marinas but not much to do outside of that. Rock Hall is the same thing. Good marinas, preferably in Swan Creek, But town is not that great.

Baltimore is our favorite. If you stay in Baltimore you will have a hard time finding a marina near the inner harbor that has a pool. You will have to stay in the Canton area and that is quite a walk to the inner harbor. However there are plenty of restaurants and things to see there. The 2 marinas that we use are Inner Harbor East Marina and Baltimore Inner harbor marina. Both have great access to the city and are very secure.

The problem is that there are so many choices in that area that it is tough to decide. If you are headed to Herrington Harbor I would do the Cambridge, Oxford, Knapps Narrows loop. You wont be dissapointed.

Just to offer another option, if you want to do an night in the Upper Bay at either the start or end of the cruise that is within an easy cruise of your homeport I would suggest the Sassafras River and an overnight slip at either Skipjack Cove (my first choice), Sassafras Harbor or Georgetown Yacht Basin. While the Georgetown area itself doesn't have much to keep you interested, the cruise up the Sassafras River alone if worth the trip. Skipjack Cove offers a beautiful pool overlooking the river, tennis, playground, outdoor grills, clean, air conditioned and private bathrooms and is dog friendly. Plus, there is a free water taxi to area restaurants, The Granery being the most popular. Just MHO.

Mike,

The club use to go to Skipjack, and do our Commodore's dinner at the Granery, But the no longer do private parties. They want us to do a dinner for 40+ people scattered around the restaurant. I still would not mind stopping there.

Where in NJ are you leaving from?

Bordentown - Delaware River

Thanks. Was wondering if you were leaving from the east coast and if I could tag along. Have a nice trip

Mike,

Skipjack got rid of the launch. We now have to hail Geoergetown and they will come down to Skipjack to pick us up for free.

Craig,
That sucks! Rich sure knows how to screw-up a good marina.

Yeah, tell me about it. Georgetown has no problem coming down to get us.
I've been asking them to get recycle containers for the past two years and they say it would cost too much. Bay Bridge Marina has them and they are our sister marina (same owners). Just think of the amount of aluminum and glass you would get from an average weekend at the marina?

We've stayed in Havre de Grace on the Susquehanna several times; no pool but a nice little town to visit including a boardwalk and small museum. Also we have stayed in Chestertown for a 2 day visit and, again, a nice town to visit. Down the Chester River from Chestertown is the Langford Bay Marina. It has a very nice pool and you can pickup the trolley on weekends to Rock Hall.

There is a really good Marina at Knapps Narrows with good restaurants, pool and the local town to walk to. Over 1000 feet of floating docks for transients on the north side of the narrows, so docking is easy. On the south side of the narrows opposite Knapps Narrows Marina fuel dock is a fishermans fuel dock that has the cheapest fuel on the bay, so be sure to fill up. Walk over the bridge to check out how to back into the dock as it is not clear the first time you might try and the pumps may be hidden behind watermen's boats.
It is a relatively short hop from Knapps Narrows to Oxford or Cambridge.

If you haven't done Baltimore before I would agree that you should make that a stop. Here would be my choices in the upper bay. #1 hands down IMO is the Hyatt in Cambridge. Great pools and plenty of activities available. My 2nd choice would be Havre de Grace. As Arks says, Penns Beach is the only marina with a pool. 3rd would be Rock Hall, eother Sailing Emporium or Haven Harbor Marina. Have fun!!
