Help please: Considering a used Regal 2765...

Hi all,

I've been looking at a really nice Regal 2765. It's got a single 8.1 liter Volvo Penta drive. Boat looks like it's been sealed in a nitrogen bubble for five years. It's basically perfect.

Two questions for you more experienced owners:

1. Top speed looked to be about 35 or 36. I thought I saw a scan of the owner's manual or brochure showing that the top speed was mid 40's. Maybe higher. It seemed to struggle to get up on a plane. Out of tune? Bad gas? It did have a tiny bit of growth on the bottom, but nothing significant at all. What top speed should I see?

2. Noise. Even at a slow 5 or 6 knots, there was a significant rumble in the cockpit. I've been on boats that seemed quieter at low speeds. Dumb question: do boats with I/O's have mufflers? Can they be changed (or added)? Not sure my wife would go for all that noise at anything above idle speed....

Could be over propped. What is the WOT RPM?

Define Rumble more exactly please. A more definitive explanation would allow us to more easily pimpoint (or at least get closer to) the problem.

I/O's exhaust through the leg of the outdrive. I have never seen one with a muffler.
 
I have a Regal with Volvo's and when I get a rumble it is usually the gimbal bearing, my last boat had only 25 hrs on it, bought the used 2004 in 2008, it was brand new looking, things can go bad just sitting.
 
Does the boat have any cockpit carpet? If not that would add to the noise level in the cockpit. I have only seen that boat equipped with twins. It might be a bit under powered and if you have growth on the bottom that would contribute to it's sluggishness. As for the rumble, is it coming from the engine room or on the transom? I would have a good mechanic survey the engine for you. Also get a good survey of the entire boat if you are considering buying it. Good piece of mind.
 
Had a 24 ft and now a 3060. Love them both. Our 24 had a volvo 5.0 and WOT would hit about 41 or 42 tops. Not sure on the 2765 but I would think that 35 is a little low.
 
Could be that it needs a tune-up. I am not sure what the 2765 weighs in at but my 260 is 6300lbs dry and with a single 7.4L it will hit 43-47 mph, depending on fuel load, gear and passengers.

Thanks for the input. I'll try to add a bit more information. The boat did have a complete survey and got a good bill of health. One issue being addressed. At WOT, the engine would lose some power and an alarm would sound. Salesman and surveyor both said they were sure it was a sensor problem that should have been fixed under recall. Salesman is having Volvo mechanic fix whatever it is. I'll speak to mechanic personally to make sure I know what is going on and what was fixed.

The noise I'm describing is two parts. Some exhaust droning coming out of the outdrive as well as some exhaust noise or engine noise coming up through the cockpit floor.

I see some fiberglass mufflers in my West Marine catalog. I'm sure they'd help with noise but also reduce power.

Top speed depends on weight. I have a 2005 2765 I bought new with twin merc 4.3's and love the boat, with me only and very little fuel, no water in the holding tanks I did 61 mph using gps. The water and wind was perfect!
 
I have a 2006 2765 with the 8.1 engine. It will top 45 on the gps quickly with two on board. I'm not sure how fast it will go as i slow down after that. A dirty bottom will reduce speed significantly. I would pull it out and clean the bottom and then see what the speed is. The boat will make some noise when you open it up but its not more than others I've been in.
 
Also, have 06 w/8.1 I have never been at WOT, but cruise at 20-24 at 3,000 RPM

That sounds like a very clean boat your looking at. The only recommendations I have for you is to make sure that whatever is causing the alarm is fixed PRIOR to any agreement being signed as well as making sure that the boat can reach the speeds it should be capable of. If not, it could mean that it's not propped correctly or some other problem. Take the advice of SW2765 and have the bottom cleaned and retest on the water. A dirty bottom, even a little bit, will severely slow down the boat.

Thanks all! Yes, my offer is contingent on the problem being fixed to my satisfaction. I believe the bottom was cleaned professionally today and a new water pump impeller is being installed.
