Hello Hudson Boaters,

I grew up in Suffern... over in Rockland my wife is from Nyack.

Anyway... I never had a boat when I lived up in that area but I have some questions.

1) I currently live in FL but was considering spending some time up in NY this summer. I am going to be staying in Wappingers Falls (east side of the newburgh beacon bridge). I was considering having a boat on the river in that area for approx 2 months. I can keep it as far south as Nyack or Piermont and as far north as around Wappingers or Newburgh. The questions is how do the marina's up there handle 2 months worth of dockage? What kind of rates would you ballpark on a 23-26 foot boat?

2) What currently is the most popular style of boat that people are purchasing up there? Down here in FL its a 22 foot single engine center console with a four stroke. Up there I assume having an I/O cruiser is pretty common maybe 26 feet in length? I'm trying to get a feel for the popular boat up there? Are CC or walkaround with outboards as popular?

Any input is greatly appreciated... im looking forward to 2 months up there and would love to do some boating on the Hudson that I never had a chance to do when I was younger.

Thanks so much ahead of time!

Peter

Peter,
Your best bet would be to call several marina's in the area. They would be able to provide you a discounted rate for two months.

Figure these numbers for a season. $70-$90 a foot for the summer. Then add for electric/water. This should give you a start.

Just like in FL the type of boat depends on the type of boater. CCs are less popular on the Hudson in summer because there is less use for them - right now, during Striper season (ends around June 1) they are catching big fish and using big fishing boats, but by Summertime a hardcore fishing boat is kinda overkill for the largemouth bass, sunnies and catfish that they catch all summer.

I/O cruising boats are more popular to enjoy weekends and overnights on the River, in fine, secluded anchorages or creeks, and swimming/tubing/casual fishing at your leisure...

Peter, drop me an e-mail when you decide the size and timing of a slip. If our club has any slips open to accomodate, I'm sure the officers would be willing to work a deal. Our rate is $63/ft for the season but maybe a discount can be worked out, electric is $100/outlet for the season, no charge for water.
