Hi Walter

Have a question about my Crusader Motor.

I'm pretty sure you had the same ones in your last boat or the boat before that..

I'm finding when i start my Starboard Motor it starts fine and around 10 seconds or so it sounds like its hissing.. When i give it gas it sounds like its running out of gas and its not responsive. when in gear i can push throttle up and feels like something is restricting the gas and it conks out.. also when its in idle it runs a little rough. Think its my fuel pump?

what do you think?

Sounds really loud... Took it back from WH yesterday and was able to get on plane however it just didn't feel or sound right
 
When was the last time you checked and cleaned your flame arrest-ers?
 
Just saying that hissing is some sort of air flow issue.
Combustion engines need fuel and air. So if air was restricted either from flame arrestor, vacumn hose off, pcv valve, etc.
That would cause poor performance.
 
The flame arrest-ers on my crusaders actually do hiss a little.

I put my hand over them while running and the suction is pretty impressive...and I can choke-out the engine with my hand...not to a complete stop but does sputter. Hence, I say check flame arrester. In fact, maybe switch them from one engine to the other.
 
Mike has Fuel injection, hence know flame arrestors. He does have a throttle body but just an air filter there. First step Mike is to replace both fuel filters, you have a puck filter and a canister filter. I doubt this is the problem, but you need to eliminate the obvious. I am free tomorrow, need to scope out a boat in oakdale for a friend in FL,. Although, I am not sure what is going on here, bet in 10 minutes on your boat I will know.

Your fuel pump is in the canister where your secondary filter is. Sounds to me that is the problem. In 2004, that canister was a bitch to remove, I am thinking yours is a 2005 motor, if so they fixed that.

I'm having my Mechanic take a look at it today..I'm thinking fuel pump as well.

Walter, I also have MPI and a flame arrester. It's not round like for carbs, instead it's a rectangle on the air intake and has two tubes to the PVC valve for fume recovery, it also makes a hissing sound.

IF you have the same setup as me(sounds like it), there is the fuel cell which contains the high pressure fuel pump and a second, low pressure fuel pump.
There is a schrader valve on top of the fuel cell (looks like tire valve). Turn the key to run position and depress the schrader valve, fuel should squirt out at a high pressure. Compare working engine if not sure. This should eliminate the fuel pump.

Any update? I'd be curious as to the cause and fix.
 
Good morning all

So.... the problem was a wiring harness plug going into the crank sensor..

Took the boat out yesterday and it ran great..

Thanks for all of your help trying to figure out what the issue was..
