High Tide

Generally speaking, it "could" change the times in which high and low occur and "could" cause a larger tidal swing although I can't see it being too much. Remember, our tides in the bay are based not only the "wave" but also the amount of volume the aggregate inlets allow into those bays (which speaks to the timing to some degree). Should be interesting none the less.......
 
If you look at a tide chart the average tide swing at FI Inlet is 3'. In Babylon it is only 1'. The bay is so large that the water level in the back bays never levels out with the ocean before the tide starts going out again. High tide at Babylon is 3 hours later than high tide at the inlet because it takes so long for the water to move through the bay. If you add additional capacity to move water from the ocean to the bay you're going to end up with bigger tide swings. How much impact I don't know, but I was surprised just how quickly the water came up this morning.

My rental in Massapequa on the water got wrecked pretty good by the storm. Tide this morning with the wind IS NO JOKE.

I stayed by the house all night in the car since I dont live there, just incase water started coming in again.

Im due to close on the house in January and I cannot afford mentally or physically to go through anymore flooding.

I agree with Billy, who cares who is responsible for this and that. Take that part of the thread to NBR.
 
I have friends in the East Venice over in Lindenhurst and they got flooded yesterday again! So I think the Winter Solstice and the new inlet combined with high winds maybe the cause for higher tides. I'm wondering if closing the new inlet would slow the water coming in enough to keep the high tide crest at a lower level?

I'm not smart enough to argue what I think is the problem, but I know from experience that when the wind blows from the west we have lower then normal tides and when it blows from the east we have higher then normal tides. The reason is easterly winds push the ocean into the corner that is Long Island and New Jersey, westerly does the opposite. If we have a new inlet that is by another threads admission, eight feet deep and 300' wide the water coming in will over whelm the water going out. As John said, the rise and fall of tide at the inlets is much more then in the bays. If you ever beached at Sore thumb or Democrat when it was open you would know. With an extra inlet of that size more water and higher tides has to be a result.

Sorry Bill. And sorry for your situation. If anything we can do please let us know. I am pretty much off for next 2 weeks.

It seems to say that this is a natural phenomena. The ocean feeds the sand to the bay to build marsh land.
That all breaches are part of this process and will close naturally or remain to allow the process to continue.
It's not clear on whether the breach adds more water to bay or helps it fill up faster. That is what I am looking for. Confirmation of that.

We are flooding here on the north shore which tells me that the flooding of yesterday and today has little to do with the inlet and more to do with conditions of island. Sewers here are full of leaves, debris and water.
 
There was a couple of feet of water at my dock yesterday morning. I put the plug back in my boat just in case. Maybe I should think about putting the drives back on. It isn't blocked up as high as I would like to see it this year.
I'm on East Riviera, pretty close to the bay. The last couple of blocks down there are getting hit really hard with these floods. I'm not sure what the answer is, but I do know that it's a great spot during the season.
I've mentioned to my wife a few times that now might be the time to buy something closer to the boat. We can't go anywhere yet because the kids are still in school, but the long range dream is a small 1 bedroom apartment back in the city and a smaller house out here somewhere down in the Amityville/Copiague/Lindy area. No need to heat, cool, maintain, and pay taxes on a 2700 SF house once the kids are grown.
I hope that with all of these crazy tides coming in and out that they at least pull some of the sludge on the bottom out with them and give us a little deeper water.
 
We have a 2 bedroom waterfront condo in Copiague.....might be for sale in a few years :)

Condo wouldn't work for us. My hobby requires at least a two car garage. I'll be looking for a small house with either a big garage, or space to put one.
 
I just added a new two car garage to my house in Florida........now I need to find a hobby :)

Just amazing with the waterfront properties...so beautiful but they definitely are taking a short term price hit. There will be a market for them again.

The tides are very interesting. i truly cannot speculate as to why they are so varied, but let's hope its a random phenomenon and not a new regular occurrence.
 
When we were looking for houses on the North Shore we noticed that the road leading into our neighborhood is only about 2-3 feet above high tide, and that's a normal high, not when its higher than typical. I felt that was too risky even though in the 20 years we have lived here that road has flooded only 3-4 times. During Sandy it must have had 4-5 feet of water on it. We wound up buying a water view house that is elevated 40-50 feet above sea level which to me is the best of both worlds. Water view, able to see the constantly changing water and weather conditions, but no worries about a flood. Still not easy to get insurance here and ironically, I saw the worst wind damage in terms of fallen trees inland, than here on the coast.
 
The weatherman said that the tides can be 3 - 5 feet above normal tomorrow night and early Thursday morning. This could be trouble.
 
Nasty winds again too. Gonna be rough for us on the water. Here we go again.
 
Ugh, 50 knots of wind out of the east again... Hadn't been paying attention to the forecast, didn't realize we're going to get hit again!
