High Waters in July????

This morning [Saturday] I was awakened around 4AM because an airplane was flying low over Franks Tract. I have to assume it was practicing for the BIG air show at Bethel Island on August 26th. The plane made three passes and then left.

I couldn't get back to sleep, so I went topside and enjoyed watching the sunrise. It was high tide and I noticed that our dock ramp was higher on the dock end then on the levee end. I've only seen that before in January when lots of water is running from the mountains into the delta and the tide is coming in from the west.

What would cause such a high tide in July??? I'm thinking maybe they turned off the Tracy pumps or they let lots of water out of the reservoirs. But why??? Does anybody know anything?

There have been some of the highest tides of the year during the last 3-4 days, but nothing out of the ordinary. I haven't heard of any other causes. Sounds a little strange, though.

Well then, it must be Global Warning!!! All the ice in Alaska is running up the bay and into the Delta....right?

The reservoirs are significantly lower this year than last due to the dry winter. I'm watching it closely because I'm headed up to one in particular for camping before the week is out. I doubt they'd dump extra water on a whim.

My understanding is that the reservoirs are ok this year 'cause we got so much precip in 2005-2006, so this last season's dry winter didn't hurt. But it will next year if we don't get 100% of normal this winter. Maybe the Tracy pumps had to be shutdown for repairs.

We were up watching the sunrise also. What a beautiful sight. We also noticed the high tides at "The Outrigger". Our cat snuck through the open hatch on the bow. (Only opened about 6 inches) Thanks goodness it was slack tide because he decided he was superman and could fly. Evidently he was trying to catch a swallow and into the drink he went. I don't know how he got out of the water but when we missed him and started calling him he reappeared at the bow hatch soaking wet. He normally is on a leash in the boat so he won't try jumping off the side, but it was in the wee hours of the morning and we were sleeping. Boat was totally closed up except for the 6 inches of the bow hatch. Guess he is going to either have to sleep with his leash on or get him a PFD for his early morning excursions. Little stinker.

LOL I used to bring my cat to the boat. He fell overboard 4 times the first year. After that, no more spills ever! I always managed to get himself back onto the dock or boat by himself. Cats hate the water but are amazing swimmers!!!!!

This is his 4th time in water. Do you think it will be his last? lol. Mother abandoned him at 4 days old. Had to take him to the boat each weekend to feed him. Now when he sees us getting ready to leave he runs to his carrier and just stands there. Oh well, maybe we will be able to see if old tale is really true about a cat having nine lifes.

All the extras cats in the water are causing the rising levels...
Not quite as silly of a theory as global warming affecting global levels (insert sarcasim here).

Hold on folks. Schwarzenegger used the San Luis Reservoir as a backdrop for his new initiative for stealing water from the delta as a guise for "conservation." [See other topic]. Could they have deliberately lowered the volume for the dramatic effect by stopping the pumping at Tracy for a few days????? Am I really getting that cynical? Yes I am......

Phil----my comments about Global Warming were purely sarcastic!

Cat----my cat had 27 lives and used up most of them the first year. He lived to be 12 and finally was taken by kidney disease..... I still miss him after 2 years.

Yep I agree you do get attached like family. Our dogs (Rott and German Shepherd) are too big and active for the boat so we will continue to take the cat on board. He actually does quite well when he stays out of the water.

I've been coming to the Delta for 30 yrs and have never seen unusually high tides in July before, especially since we had a very dry winter!
