Hogan has landed!!

Mike, Beautiful boat. I am glad all worked out well with the transport and maiden voyage home. Best of luck with her. I hope to have a chance to check it out sometime.

I was looking for a spot in NJ that could handle my size boat. Billylll suggested his marina. I spoke to them and was impressed that they could do the job right at the right price.

Walter, the shipping alone was $7500, then another $3000 on each end to make it ready.

Wow! Glad I got regal to pay to prep and move it.
Oh wait, I didn't get any prep work at the other end.
That is why I am suing them!

Captain wanted about $10,000, plus food, dockage, fuel and wear & tear on boat.

We would have been fine if we had the right weather. I called my friend at SeaTow and he advised against going outside there ws a boat lose that had swamped in the inlet and the waves were reported to be 6 to 9 feet. I was also told the seas were confused. Unfortunately I took Mike too early we had a above normal tide in Tuckerton Creek but the back bay was anything but normal. I just touched in one location later literally a hundred yards from the ICW. i knew we were in trouble when I noticed Mike didn't come on plane in the back bay. He was churning mud. Once he was able to come up on plane we then went into the Parker cut which I have run numerous times and bumped. This is where the trouble started for Mike. I had no problem after I touched but by the time I called Mike he was stuck. He did a great job getting off lucky this area is soft mud only. Then even approaching the LB buoy the marker for the ICW it got shallow and I had to make a quick move to starboard very close to the marker. I did warn Mike that we don't call the back bay the ditch and even the Jersey ICW. Mike is right it seems in spots the thing is so narrow it is very hard to navigate. We had one other problem the weekend before his boat arrived we had a bad Northeaster come in and it moved some of the shoaling. I still question Mikes draft on his boat because when he was stuck he told us his depth finder had him in enough water. The good part was I had SeaTow stand by he was watching us after my initial call. I called Rich off when Mike got free. I was worried he would over heat if he sucked in too much muck. To further complicate the matter I had a sailboat off my starboard front who wasn't moving fast as I waited for Mike to break free. I was able to hold position fine until he got free. Mike I didn't do the trip you did and I was exhausted once we returned to the marina. Mike I knew you must have been shot. I would still volunteer to help anyone on the board and do it again. Looking back I think we would have never touched and Mike getting stuck had we left 1 to 2 hours later. Not knowing the real draft of his boat really bothered me. Dave was much easier we made an easy run out the inlet, had good weather, his draft was like mine, we had good wind conditions and a high tide. Best of luck with your beautiful boat Mike. I hope the package I gave you will come in use. I sent you some pictures as you passed us on the ICW again tonight in case you didn't get them before. Sunday afternoon around 5 we went out and it was as if it was a different world, calm, normal tide and relaxing. Course I slipped cleaning the boat and may have bruised or broken my left elbow. No pain just a huge lump very strange no pain.

Also to Mike's surprise going north on the Jersey ICW red is left!
Mike did you notice the lack of any sized boats like ours? We were the only 2 larger boats that I saw coming and going on the ICW. I also had no Class A or B AIS targets usually very rare. There was a small craft warning almost the entire weekend. Sunday late afternoon and early evening were the only real breaks we had the entire weekend. Monday morning we had unreal winds.
At one point we encountered a few people standing in ankle deep water less than 50 feet away from the ICW on some of the small islands off Long Beach Island in the bay.

Bill,

Hats off to you and Dominic for your willingness to help other ROs out down your way.

Just too bad the weather was not on Mike's side.

Bill, there were virtually no other boats out there until we hit Barnagat Bay! And then the only larger boats were the fishing charters.

I almost forgot that sailboat - I had to wait for him to pass, otherwise I would have gotten out sooner.

Boating is always an adventure - that's what memories are made of!

not sure if this was not option for you or not, but it may be for others in the future....when i had my boat shipped it was a lot more money to bring it into ny as well. instead, i had it shipped to liberty landing in nj. i didn't need any prep on this side, though.

10K Mike? Sounds steep. How long was the trip projected to take? I know someone who ran from Maine to Key West in 6 days on the outside in a down east lobster boat. He had a gang with him but they did it.

So....Mike.....when you coming back down to Jersey? Plan a trip to Atlantic City....ALL outside running.

Seriously thou, I've been up and down the ICW in Jersey from Pt. Pleasant to Cape May a few times in my years. It's really not that bad IF, and that is the biggest IF you can say, you stay in the channels...THE ICW CHANNELS!!! There are many places where smaller locally marked channels (some not so well marked) will biforcate with the ICW. I've heard many folks who run aground, and a very good friend once, say...."But I was in the channel". In all cases, they were not in the ICW.

A key to remember when traveling the ICW....Green ICW channel markers will have a square 'gold/yellow' symbols on them and the Red ICW channel markers will have a triangle 'gold/yellow' symbol on them. If the marker you are looking at doesn't have the gold/yellow square/triangle, then you have left the ICW. Another good tip is, when the ICW marker is on a fixed Dolphin or Pole, there are two markers on the poles....one for each direction of travel....if you are trying to locate the next marker in your travel, look at the marker's back marker....it's facing where you want to go.

Dominic the real problem was the weather and the ICW is not great but the winds and strange blow in and out tides made it very difficult to predict what we would run into. My challenge was holding position and deciding if I should go back throw Mike a 1" rope and try and help him out. I am glad I decided against that I might have actually damaged his running gear rather than him bumping in and out of gear to get back in the cut. I decided that because my wife was so upset because she was convinced I was the cause of Mike's boat grounding and it would be damaged she wanted me to write Mike and ask him if I caused any damage she would make me pay for the repairs. She worried he wouldn't make back to his homeport because of the soft grounding. Mike I am dead serious she was real PO'ed at me because she thinks we should have waited at least another hour. I tried to tell her I had no control of the weather especially the wind which changed the water level I am used to running in. Again Mike when you find out how much water your boat draws I would be interested in the real draft. In one place my boat specs say 2'6 and others say 3'6" I am every bit of 3'6" my props are 23" alone and like yours unprotected. So 2'6" would be impossible on my vessel unless the props were removed. I finally ended up measuring the waterline when I had to have a quick pull out earlier this year 3'6" so if your boat draws 4' we only had a 6" difference. It's really hard for me to believe it is 4'. Like I said I did a quick measurement and got 4'10". Once your boat was in the water I didn't have the actual waterline but the dirt line from the shrink wrap. My hats off to you for persevering under bad conditions. I would have ended up taking a week to do the trip under the conditions you ran in. I generally like to enjoy myself when boating and take my time. Perhaps that’s why I keep looking at Trawlers or Cats. Bottom line my wife and I were both very relieved when we got your text message that you made it home safe and sound. Woman can't live with them can't live without them! Hey at least mine made me get the best Raritan head on the market! Now I will be in the dog house for that comment!

You wouldn't have run on the outside last week unless you had a death wish or a larger boat. There were warnings up from Hattaras to NY. There were numerous sinkings off the Jersey coast. A charter boat went down off CapeMay Monday looked like a 48 Viking at the Elehants trunk. We lost another sailboat Thursday just inside the inlet and to top it off yesterday a charter boat lost a good portion of it's bow it was able to stay on plane and get back in. There were other SAR's. The day Mike and I were thinking about going outside a 46' Grand Banks Trawler broke his davit system and lost his dingy which was floating half sunk 3 miles north of our inlet and he was looking for shelter he reported 9' beam seas. It was a bad week again my hats off to Mike for being able to get home. If he would have waited until Monday the wind was 50mph. You just couldn't win for loose. Bill

It's a hack of a boat built like a tank. But you can get a bit of a spray in 5+ footers I haven't felt it pound yet.

When I first went out of Manasquan, there were 7' - 9' waves, with a very short period between them, breaking over the bow. The boat ran like a tank, but I was not going to risk my family just to get home. I found a lull (only 5') and swung her around and rode the waves back in.

Three hours later, we made it out in the short decent weather window and had a nice ride home.

Bill, your wife is very lovely, tell her that everything is fine.

I thing it was a good choice better safe than sorry. No need to risk the family in a boat that you are just getting to know. I know my boat well and I still wouldn't have left the dock in 7' to 9'. I've done 5' to 6' coming back from Block the boat did well but it wasn't the most enjoyable ride and that was a short distance until it claimed down past Fishers Island.
Again glad you made it back safely and I look forward to seeing it.

Mike let's all remember a quote from a well known capt. "If it's going to happen it's going to happen out there" glad you guy's had a good ride home, hope to see the boat this weekend.

Mike smart move on your part, also in those seas and being the boat is new to you, was not the time to find a, "WTF was that"?

Walter
