Hogback Island/Park. Has anyone ever been?

Hogback is a great little hidden jewel. The launch ramp only has a small finger dock to be used for launching and pulling out, so you can't tie up there. You can however, come into the bay there, drop a bow anchor and pull your stern close to shore. You'll still have to swim or wade to get to shore. The spot offers vast expanses of green grass, barbeques and picnic tables. There is also good ski water nearby.

Hmm..that's the only thing I'm not comfortable with. Beaching my boat. What side of the island did you beach your boat on? I am comfortable anchoring but dont have a dingy and would need a way to get to shore. Something to think about.

I have been by there a bunch and it is beautiful but my take would be that parking and launching on a weekend would be chancy and available picnic areas slim. If I were launching I would put in at Vieiera's or Rio Vista and cruise over and maybe do the old delta techique of anchor off the bow and line to land off the stern trick. Steamboat Slough is one of my favorite cruising areas and that alone is worth the time and effort.

To beach a boat, you need to have a good, sandy beach which extends out to deeper water. Line the boat up to the beach, drop your stern anchor and feed out line as you drive the bow towards the beach. When the water is skinny, turn off the engine and tilt up your outdrive. Let the boat settle onto the sand. Secure your stern anchor rode to the boat, then get off and secure a line to a tree or drop the bow anchor into the sand. Enjoy fun at the beach!!!
Make sure you have checked the tide tables if you are going to beach your boat pretty much anywhere on the Delta. Water level can change quite a bit in just a couple of hours and I am sure you can visualize an out going tide with your boat sitting in the same place. I learned this the hard way many years ago after spending close to an hour getting my ski boat off the beach. The water had only went down about 6 inches but it made for a lot of work to get the boat free. We always drop an anchor now unless we are only going to be a few minutes.

I was there a couple of years ago. You can tie the bow to a tree and drop a stern anchor in the channel that leads from the launch ramp to the river. The Park department will charge you a fee for staying overnight. When I was there, it was low tide and I could get from the river to the channel because it was too shollow and had to anchor out for the tide to come. So, besure to check tides. There was a lot of growth in the channel which makes it difficult to find a good spot. Suggust you do a land cruise and check it out first. It can also get fairly windy. Good luck!
I agree with boater3500. Last fall when I was there last, the launch area was pretty weeded up. Could be tough to anchor and could foul your inlets. Very skinny water at low tide, but nice area for a quiet picnic.
Have you tried Brannan Island State Park? You can tie up to a dock near the launch (not on the launch side of the dock, though) or pull into in a slip and enjoy a picnic or BBQ on the shady lawn. Easy in and out...no shallows or weeds. Good restrooms. Nice place to stroll to stretch your legs, too. Lots of fisherman to talk to, also!
