OK, removed my holding tank, macerator and all the fittings today. If I live to be 150 y/o I will never do this again. :)

Now, for my question, I was amazed at how loose some of the fittings were. The tank vent fitting as well as both the inlet and outlet fittings were screwed in but only about "finger tight". Plus all of them had teflon tape applied but, IMHO, not nearly enough. Would it be better to use teflon tape or pipe dope for these screw in fittings?

Second question; My overboard hose was replaced when I did my repower but the others are very old, if not original. Naturally, I want to replace all of them. The problem is, in order to replace the pump out hose I will have to totally dismantle my boat to get to it. Or, is there a trick to snaking in the new one as the old one is removed? Same goes for the hose from the head to the tank.

When I installed my Elegance last year, obviously the 1" hose from the head was new, but as the hose to the tank is 1-1/2" I installed a adapter and left the rest of the hose as it was. It goes through portions of the bilge that simply has no access unless I remove almost the entire intrerior of the boat. So, what's the trick? (if there is one)

Bob

Hook the new and old hose ends together with a double ended hose barb.

As to the fittings, try Permatex® Plastic Pipe Sealant.

Got everything out and removed the tank. When I did so I noticed the tank was sitting on a loose piece of plywood. Looked strange so I put on some heavy rubber gloves before I picked it up. Boy, am I glad I did. It looked like a herd of camels had been pooping under there. I'm not totally sure what that "material" was but I know what it smelled like. The smell would knock a buzzard off a poop wagon. I am totally surprised I wasn't getting a lot of odor in the salon.

Anyway, everything is now out, tomorrow, total scrub down and repaint with 2 part epoxy, just like the engine room.

Then I'm going to try Bill's trick to get new hoses pulled through.

I replaced hoses on a Carver this spring....good luck.....Took out a Crown and replaced it with an Elegance in the aft, and they way the 1.5" hose was run, there was no way to "attach" and pull it and no way to run just the 1" hose and get it where it needed to be........so I ran the 1" hose from the Elegance thru the 1.5" and then pulled out the 1.5"

Bob, I had the same preoblem when I replaced my aluminum holding tank with a new larger Poly tank. It was totally disgusting. The marina still jokes about how bad the tank smelled. It was placed in a remote area of the marina and you could smell it 30 yards away.
One of the marina techs ran out of the boat once we pulled the tank and the boat filled with the aroma!

Now that is a way cool idea. when I put in my Elegance last year I made the 1" only about 12" long and then used an adaptor to connect to the existing 1-1/2" that goes to the tank.

Duh! I like your way much better.

Bob

PS: Dear God, why the hell do I love boats so much?

Good luck Bob. This is the type of stuff we will pay plumbers to do in our homes but for some reason do ourselves on our boats!

Put some Vick's Vapor Rub under your nose while you're working :-)
