I have a SeaLand holding tank vent filter. Does anyone know how long they last or how to tell if it needs to be replaced?

Should be replaced yearly, and any time your tank gets overfilled and the goo gets up into the vent filter.

I find that they last 2-3 years if you don't, as Gary says, get "goo" in them. (is it goo or poo?)
Anyway, you can tell when you need a new one when every time you flush you will smell the poo goo.

And some people feel you're better off without the filter. The reason being that the filter restricts air flow and the breakdown of the sewage.

Get rid of it entirely, a properly aerated holding tank will not smell.

Mine got plugged so I installed a section of PVC pipe temporarily, two years ago. Expected a smell problem but the religious use of KO may be working.

Mine is 30 months old. No smell yet. I keep a spare on board just in case, though. Your mileage may vary.

They are very easy and cheap to rebuild. See this link for step by step with pictures.

I do agree that a properly maintained holding tank does not need a vent filter but sometimes the vent line is just too small and a filter is worth its weight in gold.

very clever however I noticed he used a clean new filter for the demo. :D

I think he forgot the teflon tape for the new threads.
